Trying to plan a ski vacation for the family, 4 kids me and the wife. We looking at any place that's drivable from Denver. What are the advantages, disadvantages of staying in a house FRBO 5 min out of the city, to staying in the city?
This will be our first ski vacation and have no idea what to expect!
Any help will be greatly appreciated

It's about a 4 HR drive from Denver...nice resort, but off the beaten path. You might want to stay on the path of I70 for your first ski trip...just an opinion.

Since you'll have kids with you, you and the wife won't be getting drunk (I assume). Staying walking distance to town is always a plus, but if drinking and driving won't be an issue, getting a house just outside of town is definitely a great idea. Even if it's up on the ski hill instead of down near town. Crested Butte is awesome. You definitely don't have the crowds and long lines that the I-70 resorts have. You'll be driving over Kenosha and Monarch Passes, so just check CDOT's website cotrip.org before driving from Denver to make sure they're open. They should be unless a bad storm is hitting then, in that case, stay in Denver until it passes s you don't have to drive through a bad storm in the mountains.

Crested Butte is awesome. You and your family will definitely love the trip.

Crested Butte is a good town.

I agree with the above. the town is cool if you want a cozy set up and walk to restaurants.

but being near the mountain will be good for you having kids. getting them to and from ski school wont be as big of a hassle.

if you have young kids, they WILL lose a glove, scarf, helmet, underwear, jacket, between the bus ride from town to the mountain.

limiting those mistakes will make all the difference in the world in terms of having a great vacation.

I just drove this in August...simply stunning landscape.

I actually continued on the mountain road through the Collegiate Peaks and down the gravel road to Taylor Reservoir and onto Gunnison. Amazing.

Cottonwood Pass. Awesome drive and fantastic fishing. They don't plow that pass in the winter though, so it'll be closed for him.

Yeah, there's apparently discussion about paving the gravel part...

We arrive in Denver at 3:15pm Monday Dec 26th, did we mess up by pre booking the ski school for Tuesday the 27th? The wife is on me for pre booking rooms and ski school with lift tickets if we may not be able to make it in! Is this normal for these passes to be shut down?

Those passes get plowed during the day so you should be fine as long as there isn't a big storm. No way to plan around mountain weather.

When it shuts down for the winter in a few weeks it won't reopen for two years while they pave the west side.

I would recommend Copper Mountain. It's an easier drive from Denver on Interstate 70. The mountain is naturally divided according to skiing ability, which is good for the kids. A nice village for dining and shopping, a tubing hill, close to Vail and Breckenridge for additional entertainment.

i love crested butte. the town does not have a touristy feel. very friendly people. the mountain is about a 5 min ride away. great beer and pizza at brick oven. it's a fairly steep mountain compared to others.
