I was looking at Colorado during the summer with the family, ages 8,7,7 and wife.
Ive been skiing in Colorado and there are places I like but was seeing if someone knew of a good spot for the Summer. We are simi active will hike and white water raft if we can, also I like a cool mountain town village like Vail or Breckenridge.

Budget is $3,000. Looking for a 5 day trip
Any suggestions

Vail is the equivalent of a shopping mall in the burbs. It was built in the 60s purely as a town for people to stay in while they skiied. Durango, Crested Butte, Telluride, Salida and even Aspen are all genuine, old Colorado towns. Aspen of course is really expensive and Salida is the least expensive of the ones I've named. Salida is also easier to drive to if coming from the Texas direction.

You are correct on Vail. Feels like an upscale strip mall...sort of is.

Breck/Frisco...Real little mountain towns to use as a base camp for fun. OP take heed.

You people need to stop telling other people about places like Salida.

Just got back and hit Bailey, Co - South West of Denver. It is a fun tiny town for a day.

Sasquatch is here:

I know them well, just want fewer people to know about them too.

I did a ton of research about good summer towns for kids and we took our 6 and 8 year old to Breckenridge last summer

It was amazing and we can’t wait to go back. Not too busy and never waited for a restaurant.

Got a good rate at a VBRO and we walked everywhere. Rode bikes, played by the creeks, and took the lifts up to the top of the mountain.

They have a park at the top of the mountain called Epic discovery. You can zip line, go sledding, etc

We went to CO this summer after several years in Pensacola Beach and we loved it.

We took our three daughters (13,11,9) to Crested Butte for 3 nights and then Breck for 3 nights, with a day of white water rafting in between in Buena Vista. Probably one of the next vacations we’ve had.

CB is known for wild flowers and mountain biking. Breck is much bigger but also had a nice mountain park for the kids to play on.

Warm days and cool nights is a super refreshing get away from the hot TX summer heat. I would go back in a heartbeat for the rafting alone. It was absolutely incredible.

Vail is to low elevation for summer.
Base out of Breckinridge , you can sit outside around Maggie pond ,take lift up mountain and hike bike down
Go to Dillion lake
And day trip to other ski areas and use their lifts to get you higher and away to view stuff and find some ice or old snow
Fourth of July activities at Breckinridge are great and they shoot fireworks off over lake Dillion

They are very different. CB is a small town and is great for that reason. Vail recently bought the ski resort so if you want to go to a small mountain town go soon before they dump a bunch of money in to it and make it something different. The locals seemed to really appreciate the fact that we came to their town to enjoy a CO summer.

Breck is great too but much bigger. More people and lots of stuff to do. It seemed more touristy for sure.

Our neighbors are in Winter Park right now and the pictures they’re sending back are beautiful. They have done horseback riding theough the mountains, rock climbing, white water rafting, bike rides around lakes, fishing....all sorts of outdoor activities right there.

We are currently planning a trip there next summer based on the photographs they’ve sent and the chats we’ve shared .

Bonus: you can fly direct into Denver from Houston on the cheap, and it is only a 45 minute drive to Winter Park from Denver
