Hi all. I'm going to be flying back from Split, Croatia (SPU) on a Saturday in July. I need to be back in Houston by Sunday. Luckily the time change is in my favor. However it still has been a huge PITA trying to find a flight from SPU to IAH. Ive found a flight from SPU to CDG (Paris) and a flight from CDG to IAH with 2 hours of gap. Can I book these 2 flights as separate trips without hitting any major roadblocks? I know checking a bag will be a no-go as Id have to leave secured area to claim bag in CDG and have to reenter through security. Are there any other problems I may face by booking these segments separately? This option doesn't come up in google or kayak when I search for SPU -> IAH.

What airlines are both flights on? If the first is on air france and the second is air france/delta then you should be okay. If first is air france and second is united, you will be screwed if you miss the connection

Looks like first leg is Air France and second leg is American

There's a layover in Philly in between.

I would only book this Air France -> American connection if you had 3 or more hours. Having 2 hours to very likely change terminals from 2E/F to wherever american is (2A) you may have to go through security again

OP tell me your dates of travel and I'll take a look for you later today. I'm assuming this will be a roundtrip ticket you're booking from Houston to somewhere in europe and then Europe-Split roundtrip?

That's a bummer Croatia isn't a Schengen treaty member. As someone stated, it is going to cut into your time once you land in France most likely, unless I'm missing something.

You're the man, Cuse. Here's our itinerary:

Jun 23 20:00+: IAH -> FCO
There's a flight through Istanbul with Turkish Air that we'll likely look to book. We get off work at 3 and then 2.5 hour drive to IAH, so not a lot of flexibility here

June 26 FCO -> CTA

June 28/29 CTA -> SPU

July 8 SPU -> IAH

Any advice on how we should tackle this (e.g. all one-way segments) and when to look to book would be greatly appreciated. I've set up a few flight trackers in google flights. I'll likely book the first flight pretty soon as it's currently $1,000 (which seems on par with some of the more recent versions of this flight) and it's probably our least flexible flight.

Whatever you do make sure someone on the trip is paying for the flights and that credit card is with them.

That many one way international bookings is an good indicator to be flagged somewhere along the way for checkin in person.

Im booking there and back with my CSR points. It should come in handy with the 0 international fees too. Thanks for the heads up though.

I usually find better flight times out of sarajevo or zagreb. Be careful splitting flights, one gets delayed or changed and you could be screwed.

First question: Are there any closer airports to your house than IAH? Not sure which direction you're coming from. If you get off work at 3, you might be able to make it to a closer airport and catch a 5:30 or 6pm flight.

Second question/thought:I'm wondering if you should book this as a multicity IAH-FCO and SPU-IAH. If you book multicity tickets, most of the us airlines throw out the one-way prices. After browsing though, it looks like your best best is actually two one-ways to/from the US. I'll post what I found below

June 23- one way
Leaving out of IAH after 20:00 is tough. Looks like there's a turkish flight, a british airways flight through LHR, and an 8:15pm flight also through london.
$1036 for a one-way on turkish
LINK

July 8
One way SPU-IAH is $1149
Double connection in Copenhagen or Stockholm then Chicago or Newark (on SAS/United).
LINK

This to/from europe will be around $2185 if you booked today.

June 23- July 8 multicity
$2507 on british airways
Depart IAH at 8:25pm, 2 1/2 hr connection in london, arrive in Rome at 5:50pm

Returning July 8 at 7:45am or 11:50am
Multicity

For your FCO-CTA flights, it's $49-$65 for a one-way

LINK

CTA-SPU is pretty pricey and there's no nonstops. Best I can get is $119 on June 28th
LINK

Grand total would be $2369 for everything for one person so just double and it's $4738. I'm not sure if this is a good deal or not out of IAH since I'm not sure of the average prices to europe out of IAH. Hope this helped

BPT is really close but there's only 3 flights per day to DFW. I'm not sure when the middle one is but I may only be able to make the last one. I would love to fly out and in from here, I just didn't think it would work.

Any advice on when to book these?

Thanks again for your help. It is greatly appreciated.

Think I might've found your best option and that is out of BPT, not IAH.

Let me know if this would work for you
$1827 roundtrip on American/British Airways
Depart BPT on June 23 at 6:10pm, arrive DFW 7:25pm
Depart DFW for London 10:10pm, arrive at 1:15pm
Depart London 3:45pm, arrive Rome 7:20pm

Returning is a triple connection unfortunately at the cheapest price.
Split-Zagreb-London-DFW-BPT
For the London-DFW flight, book the American flight that leaves at 12:50pm instead of the british airways flight that leaves at 11:50am. I'm not sure if there's an interline agreement between American/Croatia where they will automatically transfer your bags. You may have to pick them up in London and then go back through security

LINK

$1827 doesn't sound like all that bad of a deal if you can leave from your home airport, it fits your timeline of when you can depart (after 6pm from BPT), plus it's less than two one-ways IAH-Rome and SPU-IAH

You're tGOAT man. Do you have paypal? I'd like to buy you a beer. Flying out of BPT will be such a relief. Everything I saw was $3000+ though.

It's all good man, I do this in my spare time free of charge

Now in the google flights link I have above, it suggests booking with a travel agent. What you may want to do is book this multicity ticket BPT-FCO and London (LHR)-BPT using the link below. If you follow the link through, you can book directly through American and not a travel agent. At that point you will have to book your intereurope travel separately, including SPU-LHR on croatia. Or you can see if it will book via a site like american express travel

I was planning on using my chase sapphire rewards to pay for this. I'll contact one of their agents to see if they can help me.

Regardless, you will need to change terminals, and at LHR that means you will need to clear immigration and security.
