I'm looking at making the trip over again next year, but this time for the bama game. As much as I would love to just watch LSU play, I also love experiencing the whole college tradition. So this time I would like to go see what the other stadiums and colleges also have to offer. Any opinions on must visit college towns for a game? Can anyone recommend going to Morgantown West Virginia? I've always wanted to experience something like this! WVU post game

I am biased, of course, but Madison and Camp Randall would be a fun visit. Madison is a popular pick for best college sports town and Camp Randall is always talked-about as one of the more festive CFB experiences.

Last season would have been great with Ohio State and Nebraska at night, but this season has Iowa and Michigan back-to-back in November. One of those two could be worth the trip.

Flyover of Madison
'Jump Around' at Camp Randall
'Build Me Up' at Camp Randall

I hate the Big 10, but agree that Camp Randall was a blast. The whole town of Madison is so fun.

If you go to a WVU game, go as a WVU fan, because things can get very nasty.

If not, you can come visit us at VT

my friend and I are planning a similar trip, although we want to visit an area in the south, and, in addition to the football experience, we want to visit a great college town.

U-Washington and Ohio state are both in major cities, so that wouldn't appeal as much to me (although I'd imagine the Ohio st game experience to be awesome).

Oregon, Wisconsin, WVa and Tennessee all sound like excellent ideas

when I researched this topic, Athens Ga was universally lauded as the quintessential college town, although most said the actual gameday experience wasn't as good as other schools.

What about Clemson? They are on cloud nine right now and I've always wanted to go there

Ive heard Morgantown is really sketchy if you're an opposing fan. But since it seems you wont be, should be fine.

Been to Athens I assume?
Madison is great
Columbia MO(just like athens)
University of Arizona is actually tight.
Dont go to any big 12 other than Ut

Consider the source of this comment, a hated VPI fan.

I went to the LSU game at WVU (2011) in full LSU gear. Everyone (WVU fans) was cool with me.

It was a wonderful experience, Morgantown itself is somewhat of a shithole but the stadium/tail-gaiting area was nice.

Blackburg, VA (VA Tech) would be fun to visit, it's just so tough to get in and out of.

From an SEC perspective I have been to

Georgia - did not like, Athens is to hard to get to
Florida - the game was a side trip, we went to Disney, enjoyed Florida campus!
Ole Miss - cool atmosphere, Grove, the Square, enjoyed it even back when the stadium was not all that impressive
Auburn - fun trip as well
Tennessee - the gameday experience was ok, cool if you want to take in that whole area though

Athens is hands down the best college town in the SEC, and I'd put it up there with any in the country.

I try to make it to a different college stadium every year.

Here is my list of favs, excluding Tuscaloosa:

Ohio State - best overall experience. Great food and bar options, clean city, beautiful University, awesome stadium, and we encountered a lot of very hospitable fans.

Georgia - great college town environment. Awesome bar scene. Was there for the Blackout in 2008... one of the best game environments I've ever experienced. Fans were the worst I've experienced.

Colorado - Hard to beat backdrop of the Rocky Mountains. Boulder is an awesome place. Beautiful women, laid back, fun people.

Arkansas - most pleasantly surprising experience. Fayetteville is a pretty awesome place overall. Again, very surprising. Top notch stadium & facilities, too.

My most disappointing experience was Ann Arbor. Maybe it was because the weather sucked while we were there, but it was cold, the stadium is the most underwhelming experience I've ever had. Crowd was quiet, stadium seemed very small although it seats a ton. Food was average. Campus was meh.

West Virginia is on my short list for sure.

Nebraska

I'm indifferent toward Nebraska as a program, but it was the best atmosphere I've seen. Halloween 1998, slate gray skies, harvested cornfields all around, and a sea of red as loud as a jet engine.

...and then Ricky Williams went old school on 'em.

Yep. Athens is a cool town, I lived not far away for a while and I've been to games there twice. UGA fans are the worst, and I say that after having visited every SEC stadium, most of them 2 or 3 times.

Notre Dame is a good trip. And I enjoyed Blacksburg.

Heard nothing good about West Virginia from a number of friends who went.
