Travel Board:

I'm going to be spending the month of December in SE Asia (Thailand, Cambodia, Singapore, Vietnam).

What recs does anyone have for a month long backpacking trip?

I would recommend a travel duffel (with shoulder straps) over a traditional hiking bag. I went for two weeks (just to Thailand, but we were on the move daily) and found that I had the best option out of everyone. I was able to fit everything I needed in the bag I had (link below), only did one load of laundry there, and still had room to bring souvenirs back. Those that I traveled with had either 65 or 80 backpacks, and they weren't very functional when it came to them accessing things. Most of them had to pull everything out in order to get to something.

Osprey Duffel Backpack

When it comes to sight seeing in Thailand, go to as many of the islands as you can - depending on your age (and willingness to party) hit the Full Moon Party in Koh Phangan. We took a ferry from Koh Samui (where we spent two days as well).

North Thailand (Chang mai area)
Island hopping in south Thailand. Research the different islands a see what you like. Avoid Phuket unless you like the big all inclusive resort type thing.
Siem reap Cambodia
Hoi an and Hanoi Vietnam
If you think you can fit it in try and do bagan and inle lake Myanmar. Timewise it would be tough to fit Myanmar unless you're staying a short amount of time in each place.

I went with the Osprey Far point 55. It has a day pack which is good for daily travels, and the big pack has gotten into every overhead that isn't some small arse shuttle plane. In fact, I'm sitting with both right now at the airport.

So far so good. If you pack right, just do laundry from time to time.

Have fun on the trip. I've done Thailand and Cambodia but Vietnam looks great too.

bought new backpacks this year since my Redwing was getting old and I wanted a smaller main pack. I bought the Osprey Farpoint 40 which I really like. You can tuck and zip the shoulder straps in their own compartment in about 20 seconds which is great for checking you backpack. My Osprey weighed 12 lbs packed which is a record low for me. I also bought a new carry on pack as my old carry on pack was very small. Swiss Gear Lightweight ScanSmart Laptop Backpack SA1923 is what I went with as I travel with my laptop so I can work while we are traveling. Again, really good pack. It has a TSA friendly laptop foldout thingy but I never used it. I just pulled the laptop out like normal.

Already have my place for full moon booked!
Age: 26
Willingness to party: High

I like the look of these duffel type backpacks (seems very functional), I haven't see these before. I'll head to REI to check them out this week.

I use a Gregory Baltoro and it's fantastic. There's also a front zipper that makes the inside accessible like a duffle.

I have a Gregory Forester, 50 or 55, can't remember. No complaints about it over the 8-ish years I've had it.

Also, the most important thing is to try on backpacks to see which one fits best for your body before buying. You could but the greatest backpack in the world and if it's too big then you'll really regret it.

Come back and post a shite ton of pics! For Singapore, check out Santos's island. Lots of small places to stay and their daytime beach clubs are legit.
