Heading there tomorrow on a whim (wife has business and I am tagging along).

Will be based in Zurich, but getting a Rail Pass.

I have four days on my own.

Any recommendations?

Are you sure the rail pass is cheaper? You usually have to buy them before you get there right? I'd look up where you want to go first and price the tickets, rail passes are often times not all that great.

I am going to take some far ranging trips, and adding it all together, it would be cheaper.

Is there a time of year that is best to go to Switzerland? Or other parts of Europe for that matter...

If this is a serious question, then yes. You have to be careful with big ski areas and snow areas because they can almost completely shut down in the shoulder seasons. In May-June when the snow is melting its called mud season, and then in the fall before the snow is heavy they take time off and shut things down. So the mountains very much are best in summer and winter.

If you go to Interlaken, make sure to spend half of the day in Lauterbrunnen. It's a 7 franc train away. One of the most amazing places I've been. It's like a fantasy world there

It overlooks Lucerne! Perfect. You've got something to do now since two people suggested the same thing.

Nothing wrong with Interlaken. Sure it's not your typical Swiss town, but it's close to 2 great ones in Thun and Spiez. Plus you can get to Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald from there very easily. It's a hub to other locations that also has some great adventure stuff like rafting, canyoning, and throwing yourself from various cliffs or planes if you're into that sort of thing.

ETA: Pics of Lauterbrunnen. Go if you get a chance. Hike or just walk around or just grab a beer at a pub or small restaurant in the middle of town. Either way it's incredible.
