Cable internet is still being run through coax. Coax is still being installed in new construction. When will we have something better?

I dont know the capacity of coax but one plus i see with coax is it basically meshes all the rooms together. if you put an input in at one room all rooms can pick it up.

CAT cable isnt like that.

with all the chord cutting and people using local tv antennas, I'd imagine there's an increase in Coaxial cable usage.

I believe older coax is different from newer satellite/cable company coax used today. RJ-59 or something like that.

Not for getting a TV signal. I remember several years back all the cable companies, BluRay players, etc were touting HDMI connections. Which when you are dealing with a digital signal, that is the best thing. But for simple OTA signal, the tried and true coax is simple and works. No reason to change that. I get awesome HD signals from my cheap RCA I mounted in my attic. And the fact that it can take one signal from an antenna and split it off to more than one room with cheap coax, it probably won't ever go away.

Fiber to the house and probably a mix of Cat6/wireless in the house.

Coax will be around awhile though.

The newer stuff is RG6. I think the main differences between that and RG59 are a thicker wire inside, more insulation, and more shielding.

Nobody does, really. It is just a physical medium, and technology is always improving to make better use of the medium, and also improving the quality of the medium itself to support new technology.

Theoretically, if we could make full use of the cable, it's capable of transmitting 10s of gigabits and possibly up to the terabit range over a single line. Obviously there are a lot of factors, like cable quality, interference/noise, length, etc.

do you even wire bro?

you connect every room together with just coaxl cables and non powered spliters.

CAT cable needs switches and routers to do all that.

MoCA 2.0 over coax can transmit gigabit ethernet.

DOCSIS 3.1 is capable of 10 Gbps, so that is where it is right now.

Well, it doesn't need all that, that's just how we use it.

It's still copper, just a physical medium that you can send any sort of signal over (within its physical limits).

random question, when ATT fiber gets installed do you have to use their "modem/router" combo or can you get your own, better equipment?

You have to use our gateway. Nowit is possible for you to put it in bridge mode to a router that you want to use. At&t is not like the cable companies where you can buy an off the shelf compatible modem, register it, and be on your way unfortunately.

ok. is there a reason for this? is the gateway sufficient enough for the data speeds or is it the bottleneck?

The gateway they provide is perfectly fine. You're just not going to get those kind of speeds over Wireless-ac. Wired is fine. 938 up and down here.

With EATEL, no equipment is required inside the home. Of course I use a wireless router ... not sure if AT&T works the same?

Traditional Line Technology will be obsolete within 15 years.

We have new tech in the lab that can transmit 5 Gbps OTA. The large carriers are in a scramble right now to get a lot of this out to market.

TMO bought 600Mhz spectrum for a reason folks. It's not just 5G for phones.
