Verizon kills off service contracts, smartphone subsidies

Verizon is shaking up how you pay for your wireless service.
Verizon Wireless on Friday introduced a set of new data plans that require customers to pay for their smartphone in monthly installments or buy it outright. The new plans go into effect August 13.
It's a radical change in how Verizon operates and signals a broader shift away from smartphone subsidies and service contracts. Customers are increasingly paying for their devices in exchange for lower service fees -- a trend started by T-Mobile two years ago. The change has resulted in heightened awareness of their smartphone and service costs.
Under the revamped system, there are no single-line options or family plans. Verizon will focus its efforts promoting four choices with varying amounts of data. (They all come with unlimited voice and text messages.) The "small" bucket will offer 1 gigabyte of data for $30 a month, the "medium" will get 3GB of data for $45, "large" gets 6GB of data for $60 and "x-large" gets 12GB for $80. As with its previous plans, the data can be shared among devices and accounts.
As there are no contracts, customers can switch between plans each month.
Beyond the fee for the data, Verizon also charges an "access" fee to connect the device. It will cost $20 a month to connect a smartphone, $10 to connect a tablet or "Jetpack" portable Wi-Fi hotspot, and $5 for a connected device like a smartwatch.

AT&T and others can't be far off from following suit. So when the iPhone 6s is launched next month (or by the time of iPhone 7 launch next year for sure), no longer will Apple be able to show a price slide like the one below. They will be forced to put up prices like $649, $749 up on the screen, which they probably don't really want to do, because there is surprisingly a vast majority of people still in the US who think their smartphones cost $199.

The Next plan

Holy shite. People are about to riot over cell phone prices.
I hate having the monthly installments...but I always end up getting the highest storage option and don't plan on paying over $1,000 for it every two years.

So, how do you plan on paying for it?

This is an old but eye opening chart...
Subsidized
Full Price
Subsidized
Full Price

Not that eye opening. The lower tier carriers have to be competitive.

what is worth a thousand of your hard earned dollars?
too ridiculous
I paid 80

The OnePlus One/Two is looking really solid vs those full price options.

Local and state government will love this. Subsidized phone prices have been able to get around sales tax for a long time. Now the end users are responsible for sales tax on the full price of the phone, even on payment plans. I'm interested to see the impact of triple the normal sales tax from all cell phone sales.

Just another in a long line of customer screwing that Verizon so enjoys. Edge plan was never a good thing, now everyone basically has to join it.

The Edge plan still allowed you to work around the old grandfathered unlimited data plans by buying your phone outright and not upgrading your plan. This new system looks to be aimed directly at knocking those out since the EDGE plan didn't do it.
Without contracts and a full array of new plans, I see them forcing people out of the unlimited within the year. I don't see a way around having to go to a new plan now.

I'm confused as to how you think you're being screwed by having to pay the actual price of the device you want. Are they screwing you by breaking the full price into monthly payments, or are you just entitled to a phone at 1\3 of its actual cost?

I like the change.
This will put pressure on the device makers to lower the prices of their units. The wireless carriershave been competing on price and service quality and now the handset makers will too. The transparency in cost will benefit consumers down the road
It will also create a thriving market for used devices.

I have been buying mine off contract. BB has been more aggressive in offering them unlocked on its own website.

I've been a customer for 12 years and watched as they have made change after change to their offerings that are not customer friendly.
I dont mind having a 2 year contract. I can control myself and not NEED a new phone every 6 months.

Welcome to 2 years ago and what TMob has been doing, Veri$on. I though their CEO doesn't give a shite what people want and they are going to just keep gouging their customers for as much money as they can? I like the $20 "access fee" they charge . $50 for 1GB of data and unlimited text/calling and people stay with this company?
I understand if they are the only company you can get service with, but outside of that people really should take advantage of trying out other providers to see if their service will cover them. People have been getting raped by VZ and ATT for so long I guess it's like Stockholm syndrome.

well if I don't get a discount for a contract then I'm going pre-paid.

My work has handled my phone/paid for it since 2011.
I'm going to be so lost when I have to enter this market. These threads keep me somewhat in the loop. This seems like a big change.
