Seriously, this is like Blockbuster, even though the writing is on the wall, it's not going to happen quickly.

In the business world there is more of a move to laptops and virtualized desktops than tablets. Until tablets can do everything a laptop/desktop can do (Java, Flash, etc) as well as have at least support for regular keyboards (those tiny, flat keyboards are only somewhat better than typing via the screen), tablets will not be more than a status symbol in an office environment.
Tablets are really close. We recently completed some analysis on tablet vs laptop for about 10k employees. there were about 5 things that would be a problem (booking travel surprisingly).
The keyboard issue is definitely a problem but most light users don't really type that much, they normally read or watch stuff. Check email, and write short emails.

Here is a thread from 2011 on TD talking about multiple locations finally shutting down in BR. LINK
People were saying Blockbuster was dying in the late 90s thanks to the DVD by mail model. NetFlix didn't start streaming movies until 2007.

What were the other 4 things? I'm guessing horsepower and software availability are two others?

software availability
Software availability is almost a non issue with RDS/Citrix
I can run my accounting system, document imaging, estimating you name it, on my phone via Citrix.

No, they were pretty strange
* inability to access our online training system (uses flash)
* inability to "pre-install" software, this can be done but not by our shitty IT department
* Corporate control of assets, i.e. someone walking off with a tablet and having sensitive information. This is fixable but again shitty IT, or more likely lazy IT.
* Ability to project non ppt content on a webcast
Again, it was bizarre. Its almost there, as in my mind all of those are really fixable except the last issue. And I figure apple will get around to it.
eta: this was strictly an iPad comparison.
eta2: There were other things that were problematic but pretty much everything could be done, just not easily.

this one is beyond dumb. in fact i hate the fact that to get onto exchange 2010 i had to 'allow corporate to wipe out my phone'
to me, its an argument FOR disposable tablets that can be remtotely wiped rather than more pricey/less secure laptops out in the wild.

This could be attributed to more than just tech/security issues though. Most companies (at least the ones I've worked for) don't want non-exempt/hourly employees even having the potential to perform any kind of work during non-business hours. Giving laptops or tablets out to everyone could expose the company to that if a non-exempt employee decides to bring their device offsite.

well we technically have this, it just doesn't work.

What has the topic of this thread shifted to? Is there even a point being made anymore?
Posted on 6/3/14 at 11:26 am to ILikeLSUToo
same one as the beginning. others are weighing in that their companies are shifting their workforces to tablets with access to more complex apps taking place via citrix, etc.
original hypothesis still stands.
you are really creating a SERVER with your desktop and you're in the minority as most people don't have the time or technical expertise to build a HTPC from the ground up.

We're eventually moving to 2010 (we have 2010 on the user-end but have a shitload of server upgrading left to do before we can take the server from 2003 to 2010), but I've never had to wipe someone's phone just to put an Exchange account on it. That's crazy, prayers sent.

sorry, i didnt mean it wiped my phone. i meant to say they NOW HAVE THE POWER to wipe my phone. my personal phone.
that policy was downloaded to my phone before i could get email once we migrated to 2010 exchange in the office.

As I understand it, the command will be sent to your phone, and you will still have to accept it before it happens

Oh if only that were all we had. :( Until they can handle manipulating multiple .TIFF files at once, packages like Adobe Connect or GIS, and have multi-screen/monitor support, we will be sticking with laptops and desktops.

That's still batshit crazy. If your email data is that valuable they should be issuing you a work phone.
