Granted you can get a very powerful laptop, but mobile i7's are still much weaker than the desktop counterpart, same goes for the mobile GPUs.

Not dead, but the mobile market has cut into them quite a bit.

I think PC laptops/desktop/traditional machines will be around for a while.

But the average consumer doesn't need one, nor does the average consumer need a specific OS ... many people can use a tablet/phone for most/all their needs.

Correct, but at least there are well documented benchmarking sites that you can read to know what to expect.
