Time To Switch? Verizon's New Plans Cost More But Offer More Too

Here's the gist of it.
1) All of the new plans have more data. They all increase in price, but the cost per GB actually goes down on all plans.
2) Not to long ago a Verizon exec said that they are leaders and not followers and wouldn't be offering rollover data. Well they are finally getting the picture and following others by offering rollover data. Their implementation is basically the same as At&t's version in that roll over data expires after a month. T-Mobile's data stash expires after a year so it's much more useful. All new plans get this feature for free.
3) If you go over your limit, and don't have any carryover data, Verizon has introduced a feature called safety mode. It's basically what most other carriers are doing to help you prevent overage charges. After you hit your high speed cap you will get unlimited data throttled to 128 kbs for the rest of your cycle. You can also still purchase data passes for more high speed data if you choose. This feature is free on XL plans and above. It's a $5 add-on with smaller plans.
4) The new plans now include Canada and Mexico basically like native coverage. This feature is free on XL plans and above. It's a $5 add-on with smaller plans.
This is basically nothing new, but it shows that they are really feeling pressure from the other carriers. More competition is great for everyone. They also didn't bring back a truly unlimited plan like was rumored. Line access charges haven't changed with the new plans and you will lose your free data for life bonus if you change to one of the newer plans so take that into consideration if you are already on Verizon and thinking about changing plans to get the new features.

I'd like to see more than 100 MB for the $40 they charge when I'm overseas.

Google Fi is hard to beat if you travel internationally a lot. They give you 256 kbs in 120+ countries for $10 per GB(same as in the U.S. except no throttle at home.) That's enough to do everything, albeit slowly, except stream video. In fact even YouTube will work on the lowest settings.
Another almost as good option for international travel and an all around better option than Fi if you use a lot of data at home is T-Mobile. They give you unlimited free 128 kbs data almost everywhere in the world along with high speed in North America for free. They are also giving free highspeed data in Europe this summer.

Well, I don't normally use more than 6g, so it looks like I'm going to have to pay $10 more for no more benefit. Unfortunately you can't modify your plan now without changing to the new one.

They also offer TravelPass for $10/day and it's exactly like being domestic. Just uses your regular minutes and data.

I was ready to switch to this (currently have 10GB shared for $80/mth) and go with the 16GB plan for $90/mth until I noticed my line access fees were going to go up $10/mth for two phones. Also, my VZ Cloud storage is currently at 25GB and would drop to 5GB. We're currently at 7.4GB used, so maybe we could pull some stuff off the cloud to our hard drive and be able to get by on 5GB.
Still, by doing this I will increase my bill by $20/mth and will pick up 6GB and rollover. TOugh to do when we aren't hitting the 10GB limit the way it is.

Was coming to post this as well, the line access fees went up, would end up costing me $30 more per month with 4 phones. Too bad, would've like to change over to the 16GB plan. May switch to T-Mobile soon or Cricket.

We probably have the same plans. I have 2 lines on the 10GB for $80/month, that never get close to the 10GB, and I have an unlimited plan that probably uses close to 12GB per month. I would end up lowering my bill, but losing my unlimited if I put all 3 lines on a shared plan, or increasing my bill if I just switched the 2 shared.

Don't overlook sprint and the unlimited everything plans. 75 for one line. The more lines you add, the cheaper each successive line becomes. I think our fourth is actually free

They don't raise your price if you are under contract. Even if you aren't under contract, they don't usually raise your price unless you try to change your plan. The only time in my 16 years with Verizon that they have raised my price without me making any changes was a couple of months ago when they increased my unlimited data plan by $20. But that line hasn't been under contract for over 2 years.

Nice regurgitation of anecdotally gathered "facts".
I live, work, and travel between large cities, and I've never experienced an issue. For those that choose to live miles away from civilization, you might want to try it out first where you spend most of your time.

Sprints building penetration is. awful though. If you walk in any large brick building with sprint its over.
Everyday my coworkers ask to use my mobile hotspot because sprint sucks and everything is blocked over the work wifi.

had spring years ago and dropped - went to AT and T
when the half off plan went back to SPring 4 months ago and have had no problems with dropped calls ans spotty coverage-- that is reputation from the past

I've been with Sprint since '02. I have 4 phones with unlimited data, so I've been reluctant to switch. However, I'm done with Sprint. I travel a bunch and their coverage is terrible and the building penetration is crap. Unlimited doesn't really matter because I can't ever use it. My traveling companions never have an issue with coverage, just me. I swear Sprint's network has actually gotten worse with time, not better.
