thats a tough one. ilike? thoughts?

you're trading AC capabilities for a more proven design with the antennas.

at $105, that is pricey on the 56u but newegg has it for $87 (not sure about tax & shipping however)

yeah that Asus at newegg is a refurb. I have no issues with that but there is also a Netgear R6300 refurb for 85 It's AC1750. I think it's one step down from the nighthawk. LINK

Tough call for me too. I know the N66U is awesome, but I only have reviews and specs on paper regarding the AC56. If I had to make a decision today, I'd get the N. It will likely have better range.

Just keep in mind that if the router is being used to locally access a USB 2.0 hard drive, no matter what router or adapters you are using, nothing will ever transfer in or out of that drive faster than 35MB/s (280mbps).

Yeah. I don't have any 3.0 storage devices. It's only 2.0

in other words, i dont think you can go wrong using rmerlin.

I'm still running stock on my rt-n66u, but I've always used either Tomato or DD-WRT in the past. I'll have to give RMERLIN a try.

his philosophy is simple:

- if you want more features but possibly more crashing/experimintal/beta stuff, go with tomato or dd-wrt
- if you want vanilla asus support go with thier firmware
- if you want well-tested enhancements plus performance plus asus base, go with rmerlin

eta from the horse's mouth

The primary goals of this project are to fix bugs, add a few basic features and tweaks to the original firmware. This firmware will try to remain as close as possible to the original firmware. If you are looking for a slew of advanced features, then this project is not for you. Look at TomatoUSB or DD-WRT, two excellent products that might suit your needs better.

If however you prefer something as close as possible to the manufacturer's firmware, then this is for you

I just got this one last week after my router died. It has a really nice management interface, i put my kids on one band and me on the other, setting the parental controls up on theirs was really easy.

It was in their daily email. Sometimes those promo codes are posted on the product page, and sometimes they are only posted in the email.

Will this really improve over the Cisco gateway or will I still have to buy a new modem?
