Smart Thermostat Question

I'm not sure if this is possible, but do any of them have a setting where you can run the fan/airhandler only and not the heat/AC? I have an older heat pump upstairs at my house, and in the middle of summer it struggles to cool and it will start to freeze up a little. I usually just click the fan on and AC off and let it run for about 15 minutes to defrost it, and then click the AC back on. What I want to know is if I can set up a smart thermostat to just run the fan for 15-20 minutes a couple of times in the afternoon then click the AC back on. It does just fine the other 10 months of the year, but from mid-June to mid-August it has issues. Older house that needs new windows and the back of the house gets full sun all day long. I'm going to eventually replace all the windows and both AC units, but just looking for something to manage it until then.

Did you have the coolant levels checked? Freezing up can be a sign that you need to recharge the unit or have a slow leak.

Yeah, I had it serviced back in the spring. It probably has a slow leak somewhere. It usually needs about 1 lb of coolant every spring. Like I said, it only has the freezing issues when it stays above 90 for several hours, which is what we have this time of year. It ends up running constantly for 3+ hours and freezes up. It was added to the house by a previous owner, and multiple AC guys have told me it is too small for the area, so when I replace, it will be something the right size.

I know on the Nest you can set the fan to run like that. I would think the others as well.

you could do it manually via your phone. I dont know about making a schedule do this though.

Honeywell's wifi has a circulate function that just runs the fan every so often.

IFTTT will let you schedule that assuming you use one of the major thermostat brands.
You might have to set a few time based triggers to turn the A/C off, fan on, etc. and then another set to put everything back how it was after a certain amount of time.

Awesome. I may order one today and get it installed this weekend. Thanks everyone.

Can definitely do it on Nest.
I noticed mine will kick the AC off and run the fan for a few minutes before it cuts off just to circulate the air.
It is doing something right. 2 BR Townhouse and my bill is around $65/month.

in the summer that would put the moisture remaining on the coil back into the air

Don't mean to hijack but I just got the Nest as well. Never paid attention to how much humidity is in the house until I got this thing, so my house is consistently at like 55-56% humidity. That seems high to me, should I be concerned about that?

do you have the fan set to "on" ? That would do it.
Another possibility, an oversized until will have short run times resulting in higher humidity. Or leaks in the return that would pull in humid attic air.
