What's the point? If for lamps, bulbs are cheaper. If for an appliance, I can't think of anything that will start what you want when you turn it on.

I agree, they are a solution to a problem that never existed.

I currently have three TP Link smart plugs in use.

The first controls my coffee maker...
Alexa, coffee on... from my bedroom.

The second controls the two bedroom table lamps.

The third controls living room table lamps.

I went with the plugs because they are cheaper than the equivalent TP Link smart bulbs and I have no real desire for dimming control/colors.
Being able to start the coffee as soon as I wake up without a trip to the kitchen is damn convenient.

I also have a TP Link Smart switch that controls outside security lighting.

Overall, I'm happy with the TP Link products.

They are easy to install and integrate well with my Echo Dot.

Could you not program your coffee maker to a certain time?

Also, bulbs are like 11. The plugs are about 30.

I have one plug and it is used for the box fan in our bedroom. It is invaluable. I can't really think of another application for our house tho except for Christmas lights.

I've never been a fan of programmable coffee makers.
Always had simple on/off versions. With the smart plug I can switch it on/off when I want, no programming required.

TP Link Smart plug: $30 ea
TP link Smart Bulb Tunable Dimable: $35 ea
TP Link basic white Smart Bulb: $20

What brand products are you looking at?

I have a lamp attached to one, 1 for outdoor Christmas lights , and 1 for the Christmas tree.

I prefer dumb bulbs. They are cheaper to replace.

Bulbs burn out and break, the smart plugs are more versatile. It's probably splitting hairs with as long as LED bulbs last but I prefer the options of the smart plugs.

Smart bulbs are obviously the easiest solution for fixtures and exterior lights though

We have a hot water recirculating pump in our garage. Our master bedroom is on the other side of the house. The convenience of switching that pump on and off from the master bathroom rather than going to the garage is worth the cost.

ETA: the pump does have a timer built in, but my wife and I both have very variable schedules, so the timer doesn't help us

My house is always crazy, so we use a crockpot a lot. Some recipes only cook for 6 hours, so I can set the plug to turn on around noon.

I will take the same plug and use it while giving my son breathing treatments from his nebulizer. After setting up the masks, medicine, tubes, and getting in place to distract him with TV, I can just hit start on my phone since I can't reach the machine easily.

How long will the bulbs last?

I need to get a smart light switch for my fan

We keep our house at 65 at night so my wife says tile floor in bathroom is cold when she gets up to take a shower in the morning, so I've got one in the bathroom with an electric heater plugged into it. Warms up the bathroom and the tiles so she's all nice and toasty. Happy wife, happy life.

you have only one out door bulb controlled by your switch?

i think it is the exact opposite. it is better to put a zwave switch on your outdoor lights because usually that one switch controls 1, 2, or 3 groups of flood lights.

Cheapest Hue A19 I find on Amazon is $15 a piece.

Nonetheless, a mix of plugs, switches, bulbs is likely to be required to get a solution customized for every individual.

I went the TP-Link solution (plugs and switches) for a couple of reasons:
- No separate hub required
- TP Link offered the right mix of products to automate what I wanted
- Only one App needed (Kasa) to control lights and simple appliances

What I would like (waiting for TP Link to develop it) is a smart wall switch with dimming control. I have a lighting fixture with apprx. 15 candelabra type bulbs.

Definitely a mix. I didn't know if I would need them but I'm so glad I picked up those $10 ihome smart plug adapters.

I'm using 4 at the moment.. One on my wink to power cycle the hub in case it ever crashes, one in my screened porch room controlling a lamp, one in the den and the other is a floater..I used it to kick on the humidifier in the 2yos room this winter at night on a schedule because I hate when i leave the thing on all day and it runs dry.

I love them. I live the flexibility over a hard-wired smart outlet and because they're wifi they still work in the wink app even if your hub is offline.

yup. lets say i'm in florida on vacation and my house stops working because the hub crashed. i can just open the wink app on my phone, turn the outlet off and back on and reset the hub.

really useful.
