Can I buy a modem from a retailer? Or do I have to get it from Cox? They say I need to upgrade to a DOCSIS 3.0 modem. Is this necessary? Any recs on a better modem? TIA

Get a SB6141 - $90. DOCSIS 3.0, 8x4 channel bonding.

This topic is covered every 2 days or so.

The one he linked (Bestbuy lol) is an all-in-one cable modem/wireless router. I'd recommend against that approach. Get a new cable modem and then get a new router if you need one - which you probably do since you're running a DOCSIS 2.0 modem.

Used Cisco DPC3010, DOCSIS 3.0, 8x4 from Amazon will run you somewhere around $20. I use one myself, I've directed many people to them as well. I have not had a bad outcome yet. Cox New Orleans definitely supported it. For the price and with Amazon's return policy, it's very tough for me to want to try anything else.

This.

Zoom 5341J is a good cheaper alternative as well.

Need some help as well. Got an email from Cox New Orleans saying I needed to upgrade my modem to a DOCSIS 3.0. Current setup is a Motorola SB5101 and a Linksys WRT54G. Took the Doc's advice and just ordered a used Cisco DPC3010 from Amazon for $18. Do I need to upgrade my router as well? Ive seen recommendations for the Asus RTN66U but is it necessary to spend that much? Can i go with something cheaper like this? I dont mind dropping the extra cash if its necessary or worth it, im just not too tech savvy. I will be streaming Netflix and possibly cutting the cord with Sling TV. Just me and the lady in the house consuming bandwidth. Thanks in advance.

Also think i have the Cox "preferred" internet (50 mbps?)

Doc also linked to this in another thread: LINK

Refurbed Linksys EA4500 N900 for $34. I used one myself for years with much more network activity than you're describing.

I can say that my SB6141 paired with an Asus AC68U has amazing range (especially on 2.4 band) and my 5G wifi speed equals that of 2, ethernet connected PC's.

While by no means is this in a competition for "the best router available" it, along with something sub $4 for a 2-year square trade warranty, likely represents the best value you'll find excluding individual sellers (pawn store, Craigslist, etc). Based on that fella above (on mobile, too lazy to find your handle, buddy) who asked for the rec's explanation of what you need, this will do the trick without a problem for the duration of the warranty (square trade on this is cheap. But so is the router. Foregoing the warranty is perfectly fine if $35 won't break you), and better than pretty much anything up to about twice to 2.5x the cost.

Again, I'll point out that I'm not the world's biggest Cisco/Linksys (both of these products are pre-Belkin buyout) fanboi trying to boost my stock, but they just happen to have what appears to be the best value on the market for fairly reliable products. It's just hard to best this combo at a performance-per-dollar level without some special sale.

this is my exact setup, and although its probably overkill, i am confident that as long as these items don't break, i won't have to upgrade anything for a long long time.

I really like the asus router and the networking software that comes with it.

I have 12+ wireless devices including, 3 dedicated streaming boxes. Rock solid all around - best setup by far I've ever had. I'm a happy camper until the next great thing I can't live without hits the market.
