Laptops: new vs. refurbished

I'm thinking about getting a new laptop and was wondering if anyone had advice concerning refurbished machines vs. new ones.
I know I can get a lot more machine (or the same machine) for less, but what concerns should I have if I select refurbished?

I bought a refurbished MacBook Pro directly from Apple and have had it almost 2 years. I did buy Apple Care also, just in case. No problems with it so far.

As long as its manufacturer refurbished you should have no concerns/issues. Check the warranty, on Windows machines they tend to be shorter than on new machines.

The ones I'm seeing are just 1 year, but I have yet to use a warranty for a computer. I'm just concerned about lingering defects that might be the reason they've been refurbished. Is that even rational?

Pretty unlikely unless that specific part has a full run of flaws - like the nvidia gpu's a few years back. Otherwise its just a bad part that squeaked through QA. I work in IT and have only purchased refurb laptops/tablets/phones. No problems at all. If you arent getting at least 20% off retail of a new unit then pass on it. The extra free warranty is worth more than a tiny discount.
Also note that manufacturer refurbished is significantly different than seller refurbished or open box / used.

Refurbished can mean the original customer unboxed it and subsequently returned it for a stupid reason, or a component was DOA so the whole thing was returned for refund, etc. Manufacturer refurbished PCs will be sold in like-new functioning condition, regardless of what condition it was in originally. Basically, whatever the reason it can't be sold as new, it's never because it doesn't work quite right or has a higher chance of failing early.

Manufacturer refurbished is the way to go. I've bought several iPads, MacBooks, iPhones, and iMacs refurbished from Apple. Depending on year model and such, I've paid 20-40% off retail (you have to check the Apple deals daily for the right one). Never had the first problem with any of them.

A 3rd option to consider is the Amazon Warehouse deals. A lot of times it's a brand new item that has a messed up box.

Thanks, baws. The new machine is great, and about a bajillion times faster than the old one.
