My understanding is you can switch back to AT&T if Fi doesn't work for you and take your number back to them. I don't know how it works with a Voice number. I never used mine.
I'm going to take the plunge right now. I'm going to use my Voice number for Fi, so my AT&T number will stay with them. I'm pretty sure I will be able to just swap my sim out and use either network. If I decide to stick with it and cancel AT&T, I will probably bring my AT&T number over then.

Well frick nevermind, I have to pay the ETF to unlock my phone just to try Fi.

I had a past due balance on my AT&T account and it ported over with no problem.

And I think it's an either or when you activate - either use the Google Voice number or the AT&T. I don't think you can switch the number at a later time, but I may be wrong.

Your phone must be paid off then, right?

This is my first ever attempt at unlocking a phone, and I have to say it's kind of infuriating.

I tried the device unlock page on AT&T's website. I figured I would fill out the form, and then maybe it would tell me how much I had to pay in order to unlock. Well, I enter my IMEI and it kicks back with "Error: We found no record of the IMEI Number you entered." How can this be? I'm on the network every day, yet you don't have a record of my IMEI number? This seems to be some sort of subtle discouragement to unlocking the device. So I called and explained what happened, and I was told that this website will give that error until the contract was up. That sounds pretty stupid, but I asked him to repeat it three times to be sure. So then I asked about my ETF, and it is currently $255. Did you know that it only decreases by $10 every month? So if I terminate my contract only one month early, it'll cost me $95. The whole thing just seems pretty stupid to me. Why do I have to pay the ETF just to unlock it? I'm not canceling the service, so it will be paid for. If I unlock and switch to another service, I'm still on the hook for the ETF, right? It just doesn't make any sense.

Anyway, does anyone have experience with cellunlocker.net or any other unlocking site? $25 sounds quite a bit more palatable.

Oh yeah, I've been out of contract since March, and the phone was long ago paid for.

So I paid $19 for an unlock code, says it could take a couple days or so. Does anybody know how these work or what takes so long?

Also, does anyone know if AT&T will be able to tell that I've unlocked my phone? I'm not too worried about it, because if they give me shite I'll just pay the ETF and cancel my service that I've had with them for 10 years.

Just got my invite a few minutes ago.

Signed up, good timing too as my current month ends the 18th so already canceled the auto-renew and should have my sim in time to port number over and be good to go.

$30 a month for 1GB and I'll get money back as I only average about 500MB a month of data over the last year with current provider since I'm on WiFi at home and work.

I got my unlock code, and it worked. I activated the Fi service, but apparently it takes a while before it starts working because every call I try to make gives me an automated message from Verizon (wtf?).

I'm running the latest Chroma, and it seems like Fi is going to work on it. After my number starts working I guess I will update here after I do some testing as far as call switching from cellular to wifi.

My kit shipped yesterday, scheduled for delivery on Monday the day before my current month runs out, perfect.

I still haven't tested the case they send with the welcome kit. I generally don't like white phones or cases, so I may never try it. The earbuds suck, but the portable battery charger is awesome.

ETA: I also HATE where the power button is on the Nexus 6. It's right where I hold it while walking, and I cut it off at least once a day not realizing I'm pushing the power button. Just a minor inconvenience.

My number still doesn't work.

Data works. SMS works. I can't make or receive calls. Sometimes when I dial out, it hangs up immediately, and other times I get a recording saying "sorry, your phone is not yet activated".

I exchanged a dozen emails with Fi support yesterday, went through several troubleshooting steps, until finally I got escalated. Still waiting on a response from a specialist.

Anybody else had any trouble? Is anybody running a custom ROM?

I'm on the 8/13 Chroma build.

The Fi app did have a problem activating when I did it on Thursday. It kept crashing before finally saying it activated.

One of the troubleshooting steps I went through yesterday was to clear the Fi app data and uninstall/reinstall. After that it did the activation again no problem. Still can't make calls though.

I wanna give this a go, just got the invite, but stalling before making the call.

I have a Nexus 6 already, but on the Next Program with AT&T, so I'd still have to pay a good amount to get the phone. I'd also have to figure out if my wife should stay on AT&T, or if I'd have to buy a 2nd Nexus phone for her, which would obviously then get really pricy.

Not sure what to do just yet.

Mine literally just got delivered, just popped the sim and waiting for my phone to boot back up.

The battery pack is pretty awesome.

I'll let you know if I do, I'm porting my number over from AT&T and on Chroma.

ETA: Mine activated fine, now waiting for the number port to complete.

I was looking at a $255 ETF, so instead I paid $19 for an unlock code. I just need to test the service before I decide to leave AT&T altogether.

The only big differences I see from AT&T is the signals aren't as strong inside buildings, and the LTE network isn't as broad. I'm on 3G signal a lot, mostly on T-Mobile. That isn't that big of a deal to me, but the signal inside buildings has been troublesome a few times.

Supposedly Fi customers are going to have access to T-Mobile's stronger LTE signal sometime later this year, but I haven't seen anything definite on that.

This is mainly why I left AT&T, I get MAYBE 1 to 2 bars inside my house and often times zero when upstairs and not by a window. They are very known for that in my whole area.

I would imagine so, Google is supposed to have full access to both Sprint and T-Mobile's towers as part of the deal for Fi, so when TMo is ready to launch their new LTE I'd imagine Fi will have access likely from Day 1.
