Is 4k worth the extra $

My 3 year old samsung led is going out. Trying to find a good deal on a 50 inch. Just wondering if I should go 4k at this point, or stick with 1080p

it looks gorgeous no doubt and is about the only thing in the last 5 years worth upgrading your tv for. the rest of that crap..curved tvs, 3D..was all a gimmick designed to empty your wallet.
to be sure, most advances are the less noticeable ones..black levels, energy reduction, picture quality...
what are your sources though? netflix? you're still subject to comcast's whims and the few 4k titles may or may not actually display that way on your TV.
i think you're future-proofing a bit by getting it..i think the industry is going to have this 4k thing figured out sooner rather than later and you'll be ready.
in short, go for it.

I've always wondered if I got a 4k TV, will UVerse display regular shows in 4k def? I think the answer is no but I'm not an expert.

Some tvs will upscale content to 4k. I have no clue whether this really works or if it is a gimmick to sell tvs.
Most of the big brands have some software whizbang that in theory makes normal content look much better even if it isn't a 4k stream.
Would be interested to know if this works worth a damn. Similar to 3D tvs being able to make non-3D content into 3-D.

I watched a movie the other day on my mom's 4k TV. The picture was so clear that it seriously made the movie feel weirdly fake...almost like I was standing there watching the filming of the movie without a camera. I know that probably doesn't make much sense, but it kind of ruined the experience for me. My brother told me that he noticed the same thing the first few times watching movies but that eventually you get used to it.

i forgot about this..yes.
myth, remember when OPPO was the bomb because it 'upscaled' regular DVDs to near-HD quality?
i think this is a similar concept..but like you..i bet the quality varies by manufacturer and whether or not it approaches 4K remains to be seen (no pun intended)

its because most new tvs come with the 120hz/240hz option ON by default.
just turn it OFF unless you're watching sports and problem solved.

I'd like to go 4k but the content just isn't there yet.

That's where the differences in brands comes in - Vizio makes some great looking, full array 4k panels, at the most competitive prices but their upscaling leaves something to be desired (if the reviews are to be believed).
I've just gone a few weeks of research and concluded - at the higher end, you're better off going with 4k for future proofing - but definitely make sure the set is what you want - full array (versus edge lit - Sony tends to be behind Samsung in this - reserving full array for their top tier sets) - the smart functions you want, active versus passive 3D, etc.
I predict that 2016 or 2017 at the latest, only 4k sets will have the latest and greatest and 1080p will relegated to the lower tier brands by 2018.
So, this is a pivotal cusp year - the last year that 1080p sets outsell 4k - again, IMHO.
