If you were going to automate your home, where would you start?

Is Z Wave still a thing?

I'd like to be able to open an app and turn on some lights inside and outside. I may also add a door lock on the front door. Maybe a camera or whatever else down the line.

What controller should I be looking at?

T there's a huge disparity between dealer only systems like control4 and wink/vera/smart things. Cost difference is night and day and the average diyer can get into this for next to nothing.

After being disillusioned with hubs as of late, I am thinking about starting from scratch with something like OpenHAB Home Automation on Raspberry Pi

Also, try to decide what you definitely want and attempt to find ones that will communicate via a single app/ecosystem

Z wave is still out there but is on the way out. Most home automation systems now use RS232 protocols now, and most markets that integrate with automation hardware will speak that language now.
RS232 is the 40+ year old standard wired serial port. Not sure what you're talking about it replacing Zwave.

Therein lies the rub. Dedicated hubs have all the required radio frequencies that you would be challenged to find to add to a raspberry pie.

Someone will win and I hate to even say it.. But it's probably going to be Apple. They'll dumb down a hub with some new wifi standard and overcharge fit their "things" and everyone will est it up like apple just invented home automation.

As someone just starting with Home Automation (likely going Wink) I hadn't heard of RS232 and when I googled it I was confused as hell

Thats the point, though. I don't need a hub with nine radios when I only need two. Get a new toy that has a new radio? plug a new radio into the raspberry.

But why have to worry every time you see a doodad on sale if your device will support it?

I wouldn't worry because the device will support whatever you want as long as you add the right radio. And like I have said before, the Wink Hub is not the answer. Also the "winner" is still a long ways from being decided, so why choose a potential loser when you can create a "future-proof" hub yourself? (Plus I am hoping this will be the push I needed to start working with raspberry pis.)

Depends on the house and how far I wanted to go. For lite automation I would just do it through a 2gig/Alarm dot com or Lutron. Anything more than that I would have a RTI system installed.

I've spent under $500 total and I have a hub, WiFi deadbolt/alarm, multiple tripper sensors on doors and attic entries, 2 WiFi thermostats, WiFi garage door opener, 10 WiFi bulbs, 3 smart dimmer switches, WiFi smoke detectors and the ability to create scripts to have all of these things work together.

With the recent IFTTT and echo integration wink is about the best turn key out there at the moment.

Not sure what else you'd want from a $10,000 control4 system except expensive service calls and a custom tablet running their app.

Like I said anything more than that I would go with RTI.

Welp. I didn't know half of these things existed. I wish you could get a commission from Amazon for all the money I'm going to drop.

Pro tip - I left home depot not 15 minutes ago and picked up a smart outlet on clearance and an entire crate of trippers @ $5 each.

The home depot guys had no idea they had this stock.. That's because it's still in boxes and they shoved it into the space above the Lutron dimmer display.

3 home depots. Same story. These were in cardboard boxes with quirky on the side. You might have to get a ladder or ask for assistance.

Crazy good deal

Eta don't be put off if they say no stock. Go look for yourself.

eta

today's haul (so you know what you're looking for), brown 'donut box' is chok full o' trippers:
