Help buying a new TV

I'm debating between the Vizio 55" 1080p HD ($429) or the Vizio 50" 2160p UltraHD ($444). I have no clue as to the merits of size vs picture quality; I mainly watch sports/movies/tv and will sometimes use it for gaming but that's not a huge priority. Which of those should I choose or is there another TV I should consider that's in a similar (or cheaper) price range? Thanks in advance for any input.

I have never personally owned a Vizio, but all the people I know that own them would never buy another.

Recommendations for another brand to look at? Any feedback on Toshiba or Hisense?

I'm not sure which models you are looking at, but you would prefer a tv that has a 120 hz native refresh rate if possible. Do either of those have it? Also, how far do you typically sit from the tv?
I will say this, I've owned Vizios and other tvs. Vizio represents tremendous value. Unless you are in the upper echelons of their offerings, it won't be the latest and greatest, but for the vast majority of television consumers, it will be enough tv.
It should be noted that the Vizio's you are looking at may not have internal tuners. If you are a cord cutter, that will impose an additional cost on you.
Another potential target to research in this price range would be Amazon's latest offering. I believe it is an Element tv. On Prime day, you could have gotten a 55" or 60" for about the same price. They are 4k sets. I think they are only 60 hz natively, though.

I have 4 Samsungs in my house, 2 of which I have had for over 5 years.
I have had zero problems with any of them.

^ THIS!
We had one and it was a POS! Would never buy another Vizio again in my life. Their QC sucks!

I don't care if you don't want a Vizio (I own a Samsung as my primary television), but Consumer Reports indicates that the 3-year breakage rates for Samsung are 5% and 7% for Vizio. So there is a difference there (Sony is 4%), but it isn't really substantial.

I have a Vizio P series and it's the best TV I've ever owned. Flawless PQ and would absolutely buy another.

I've linked the Wirecutter here before but this is their current article on the best TV.

Any feedback on Toshiba
Avoid. I bought one years back (LCD) and it developed a red vertical line on the screen. It would eventually go away after a few minutes. Then it stuck on there for good. I usually don't buy the extended warranty but glad I did on this one. It was a known issue on this model but all Toshiba wanted to do was replace the screen. Which was fine, until a few months later the replacement screen did the same thing. I used the HH Gregg warranty I bought and they brought me a Samsung that I'm still using 8 years later.

If You are looking for a tv and love to watch only sports channels, then Vizio 50" 2160p UltraHD is best.

I've purchased two TCLs for myself (one of them being the one you linked) and my parents have purchased two as well. I would buy them 10000x again with no questions asked

How long have you had them for?

I will be buying the TCL with the built in Roku for Black Friday.
I've heard very good things about TCL.
I have one Vizio tv. I also have a Samsung, Sony, Philips and Insignia.
The vizio TV is by far the worst, and it's b/c it constantly gives me problems with wifi, even though there are 2 tvs that are farther away from the router than it is that give me zero issues. I used to always have to reset the tv by unplugging it and other stupid shite just to get the Netflix app to work on it. as far as picture quality, yeah, they are good. as far as smarts go, it's a piece of shite.

My parents bought a 46" TCL 3 years ago on black friday, I bought a 50" with built in roku about a year ago for each of us, and I've had that 4k one for about 10 months

stick to samsung or sonys. make sure you get at least 240hz, or 120hz with motion upgrade to 960

That's if he's not going high resolution. If you want high refresh rates, make sure you get true 120hz and not interpolated 120hz/240hz+ bc it can look like shite

That's completely unnecessary unless you like watching fake, unnaturally smooth video
