I got my kid a phantom 3 standard for Christmas. I've had way more fun with it than he has so far. I was really intrigued by civilian drones when they became available a few years ago. This thing has completely blown my mind. Whenever these Mavic's drop in in price to the $500-600 range I'll definitely buy one.

by then the latest and greatest will be so far more advanced than the mavic. I got 2 right when they came out. I DIYed a drone from Chinese parts i could never get to fly and i have a Phantom 1. The abilities these newer models can do are light years ahead of what the P1 could do even with adding a camera to it. I though i was Badass when i hooked a go pro to it and just flew it around. then i added a chinese Video transmitter that would send me the video real time, that looked like a tube tv from 1980.

oh, i know. I just can't justify spending $1k on what would be a toy for me. If I did more things outdoors I could probably justify it, but not too many picturesque places to hike, canoe, etc around LC.

IDK but im not a pro. But when i got my P1 i just took it slow. literally just flew in circles around my yard, around obstacles and got a feel for the sticks. i got to where i could barrel roll in manual but was never ever to pull out of it so i would just flip it back to auto.

I am thinking that ordering through B&H was a mistake. At least newegg gives a "ship by" date.

It's extremely easy to fly. Just practice in an open field and you will have it down pretty quickly.

I let a buddy who has never done anything with RC even cars and he was flying fine after a 30 second tutorial about the controls.

That's good to hear, I have a little experience with the dji phantom 2 ... I helped my father in law set his up but little practical experience flying it.

Does anyone have any good info on attaining the commercial unmanned pilots license?
I plan to use the Mavic recreationally at first to get familiar with the operating systems but eventually use it on our farm and possibly for contract applications on other farms.

I know you need a commercial license for that but don't have much info elsewhere

Yeah I got "payment verified". I placed an order with newegg last night.

I have a trip to South Padre and Tucson this month so if I am going to be paying for this then I want it for those trips dammit!

Oh btw any stories of people getting pissed off at you flying a drone around?

Google FAA Part 107 Test, that's what you need to take to be commercial.

im actually planning on getting my commercial unmanned licence just to do it. Could help with my career or could just be some money on the side, or just a topic of conversation. But i do believe soon, with the rise of drone popularity, the market will be saturated with a bunch of amateur one man shop "aerial photography" companies; kinda like all the people who think they are a professional photographer cause they bought a cannon T5i.

I wouldn't do it unless you need it. The restrictions are tougher on commercial pilots than hobbyists.

Especially the rules for contacting airports when you are in their zone. You just have to alert the airport of your flights as a hobbyist, as commercial pilot you must have approval.

Ok well is there a difference if you are flying as a hobbies vs flying on the job? Or is it when you are licences, even when you are flying recreation ally you have to follow the commercial rules?

I think the difference is in how you are registered because it's based off your drone registration number which is tied to yourself, not the drone.
