My HD goes out when it rains hard sometimes, but the SD has only gone out once in 3 years

I think you'll find during football season there is a lot of bitching by the DTV folks. The Dish subscribers don't have a problem.

Been having Directv for 19 years. Trouble with weather is minimal if your dish is properly aligned. I had issues a couple of years ago with rain fades. They came out and determined that the ground settled due to rains, then drying up, etc... over time which affected the base of the pole the dish was mounted on which shifted as a result. If you buy the protection plan they offer (like $6/month), then they come out if you have issues at no charge. They realigned my dish and reinstalled the dish on the pole with additional concrete. Been chugging along since with "minimal" issues. The signal may go out momentarily in severe thunderstorms, but the signal recovers quickly with little to no interruption. The same can't be said for my neighbors with cable who have extended signal failures when the weather gets rough. Also, after extreme weather events like hurricanes, etc..., you will be up and running faster given your alignment is not jarred to the extreme.

Also, FWIW, if you have the option of Directv or Dish, I would go with Directv. Some relatives and acquaintances who switched to Dish because of their great initial offers, switched back to Directv over time. Reasons being were that they lost stations due to Dish being hard-headed in negotiations with local and national stations when contract renewals came up. Directv plays hard ball until the 11th hour, but ultimately, they came to agreements much quicker than Dish's holdouts and loss of channel availability - guessing the number of their subscriber base is too much of a negotiation factor to take lightly.

I find this hard to believe. Just what makes the DirecTV picture quality so much better? We have had Cox for 20+ years and we have a perfect picture on every channel and our internet access is super fast. Can't help but wonder if you had a bad coax connection or simply too many splitters to various components.

This all depends on what services you have through Direct TV and how long of a contract you signed.

The video feed from Cox is compressed with lower video quality. It is a fact, where as Direct TV has true HD picture.

Only rarely does my picture go out, usually at the beginning rain of a big storm. Directv has much better customer service, pricing, and they will do whatever it takes to retain you as a customer when your contract ends.

Satellite TV is less responsive (for instance changing channels) due to obvious reasons: a signal is being relayed from an orbiting satellite. The satellite transmission is also subject to disruption due to bad/stormy weather. Also I simply don't want a satellite dish on my roof or on my property in general. And if you have a wooded lot with trees around your home, it might not be possible for a dish to get a clear signal; this is the case at our home. The obvious downside to cable is cost but there is not a more reliable or high quality solution.

I had Direct TV and it was great. Only ever had a signal issue if the weather was REALLY severe. Otherwise, no complaints.

Had to switch when I moved though. New apartment had a contract with Cox.

A few problems with this. I have yet to encounter an HD box with any provider that didn't have channel lag. I have Comcast X1 now and it has about the same lag as DTV has. In general, DTV has superior technology to any cable provider. As for the weather thing, it sometimes does affect signal. For me, it had to be seriously pouring like crazy for me to lose service. It happened maybe once a year when I had DTV.

As for picture quality, DTV is pretty consistently top of the heap. They are also starting to implement some 4K programming, although it is very limited. You just can't make a valid argument that cable has higher quality signal than DTV. After all, it all comes from a satellite, but the DTV signal doesn't require the compression for long line transmissions like cable.

All that said, I have Comcast because it is cheaper since my internet was through them. DTV has some great aspects that I miss (sunday ticket ), but I eventually got tired of playing the pricing game with them and it's just easier to have it all on one (lower) bill.

100% this. I was about to cut the cord and switch to Vue, and they cut my bill in half to keep me on more than one occasion.

SD never goes out and I've invested in a $20 antenna just in case. If it's an ESPN game there's the Chromecast. The days of missing shite are long gone.
