So somehow I stumbled on this at work today. Allegedly AT&T has plans to roll out Gigabit internet (So I'm assuming FTTH) in St. Tammany and Jefferson Parishes. The press release is dated in December 2015.

What are the chances we actually see this?

I saw that last month but figured it was already posted here. I live in Jefferson and would get that in a heartbeat.

Probably will take at least a year if they do actually decide to get it rolling.

I was hoping fios would come here because it's FTTH and you get to choose your speed/price package

Was curious about pricing...this is From a earlier press release for a different city.

quote:

U-verse High Speed Internet Premier, with 1-Gbps Internet starting at $120 a month, or speeds at 100 Mbps at $90 a month, with a one year price guarantee.

As would I. I'd get it the day it was offered to my home on the Northshore. I've read rumors that AT&T is considering offering the delivery of DirecTV programming via their gigabit fiber.

While I'm all for faster internet speeds. Jesus, 90$ plus a month seems ridiculous. What in the sam frick are you people doing at home that you need 100mbps or faster?
Be honest.

I am often downloading or uploading iso's or entire virtual machines for work. At the same time streaming Netflix or music to multiple locations in the house.

Plus the technology will come. Uncompressed 1080p60/50 video takes about 3Gbps.

4k is about 12Gbps.

Now most stuff is compressed using different formats, but it's not like there are lots of things that can use that bandwidth.

Also, as people start adding IP devices (Internet of Things), bandwidth crunch will be real. Having multiple 1080p security cameras will crush a current cable upload.

AT&T Has Fooled The Press And Public Into Believing It's Building A Massive Fiber Network That Barely Exists

quote:

Note a few things about the announcement, however. Nowhere does the company state when these connections will be delivered. Similarly nowhere does the company make clear that it's targeting mostly high-end housing developments where fiber is already in the ground, making costs negligible (the only way you could technically accomplish a deployment of this kind and magically have your CAPEX consistently drop). And while AT&T claims these improvements will reach 14 million residential and commercial locations, AT&T gives no timeline for this accomplishment. That means it could cherry pick a few hundred thousand University condos and housing developments per year and be wrapping up this not-so-epic fiber deployment by 2040 or so. Nowhere -- now or ever -- will you see AT&T specify precisely how many users have, or will be able to get gigabit speeds from AT&T. That's because, in reality, users in these "launched" markets will almost always find it difficult if not impossible to sign up for this gigabit service. And, in some cases, by a "launched" market AT&T actually means a few dozen homes sitting on a hill in a single housing development.

if you are interested, read the whole article and the comments below. i wouldnt count on it any time soon

Just an update, they started digging up my street in the Covington area laying fiber for gigapower. Currently have it laying in my front yard.

They laid fiber in my hood and put up gigabit signs in the past couple of months in Denham

Not sure how long before it's actually available. Too bad I plan to move in the next year

Mid July is what my boss told me. 3 of our techs have attended fiber training class with more to follow. Only very small pockets in Metairie, Kenner, and Laplace to start. I'm not sure about the west bank, north shore or Denham as those areas are not in my turf.

I'm very conflicted. I want the GB speeds, but with Charter I have no data cap. I'm using Vue and my data usage is sitting right at a TB for this month so far and we have a week left.

I don't know about those parishes, but AT&T has been laying conduit and building up a fiber crossbox in front of my neighborhood in BR
