Apple's Phil Schiller tries to justify the iPhone's puny 16GB starting storage

Gruber suggested to Schiller that the Cupertino company's iOS devices should come with larger storage capacities on the low end, as the 16 GB of storage provided in the base iPhone 6 or 6 Plus is harder to live with with the current size of apps. Schiller countered that services like iCloud could make up the difference.

"The belief is more and more as we use iCloud services for documents and our photos and videos and music," he said, "that perhaps the most price-conscious customers are able to live in an environment where they don't need gobs of local storage because these services are lightening the load."

Schiller also said that using 16 GB storage for lower-end models allows Apple to save money for use on higher-end components in other parts of the device, like the camera.

Translation: We got rid of the 32GB option and kept the 16GB at the low end so everyone would upgrade to at least 64GB.

Apple is being greedy. 32gb should be standard on all base models. Seriously they make large profits and jumping the storage is going to be a minimal impact. The thing is they want to make sure people always go to that $100 more to get the next model that has an acceptable storage so they can even make more profit.

Try again Phil.

The 16 GB starting storage option is purely a business move. Apple isn't stupid.

Yeah, and people are pissed at them (a business) for making a business move. I think it's crazy. "They're just doing it to be greedy!" UHHH, yeah, the whole point of a business is to make money. The bottom line is it hasn't affected their bottom line. These same people crying out are shelling out the extra $100 and are still excited (and probably smug) about having an iPhone. Also think about all how many of these 16 GB phones are sold (to older people) and half of the storage is never used.

I understand why they do it, and it works, but I suppose more people are starting to realize that flash storage is cheap, and they feel sour about the 1000% markup on the 64GB+ models. Plus, it's not difficult to look up teardowns and productions costs of all the flagship phones on the market and see their seemingly absurd profit margins. All these damned for-profit corporations...

I'm sure that $5(if that)really made a difference. I don't have an issue with them doing whatever they want, but I call bs on that statement.

I never thought I'd really fill up 16GB. But the photos/videos and apps are taking up most of my space. I only have like 2 GB of music on it now.

I'm getting at least 128GB in my next one though.

My parents don't know how to use apps. They take pictures, use the internet, and text. 16 gb model is fine for them

Yeah, my Mom uses Facebook and Instagram. Pictures, Emails, texts, and calls with it. I don't think she even knows her Apple ID and password. My sister set all that up for her.

But I do like that now the next step up is 64GB. I think that used to be the top end.

I've never understood this backwards dumbass mentality. It's a business move that hurts customers, so of course customers are going to be pissed about it. Do you get happy when people do things that hurt you and benefit them? Or do you get pissed?

Yeah, I have an iPhone and I love it. But I hate the storage situation. Are you saying that people are hypocritical if they don't love everything or hate everything about the products they buy? There's no middle ground whatsoever? I can't like my phone but be critical of some aspects of it?

Yeah, I thought the same way when I helped my mother buy an iPhone. She had never used a computer in her entire life, not once, ever. Guess what? She filled most of that shite up with photos after a few months taking pictures of the grandchildren and her dog. So we decided to get her the iCloud photo storage. But we couldn't even fricking do that because there wasn't enough space on the phone to apply the latest update that enabled the iCloud photo storage feature.

I used to justify the iPhone's lack of external SD storage because the phone has WiFi and internet access and that pretty much gets you unlimited storage. And I still prefer not to have external SD storage to this day. But 16gb is fricking bullshite now. A few downloaded apps and a few saved pictures and you're screwed. When it would have costed Apple next to nothing to make 32gb the base storage when they bumped all the other tiers.

It's hard for me to overlook lack of removable storage (posting from an iPhone 5s by the way), but the market is moving in that direction. The lack of a file explorer kills me. USB thumb drives should be going extinct because most people always carry a phone. That phone should be capable of storing a document of some sort for a short time without using Internet or 3rd party options.

ETA: "extinct" is hyperbole, but "borderline unnecessary in most cases" would be fairly accurate.

The pricing is a rip off but it's a business. 16gb is enough for me so I get why it exists.

I may be in that category, as I use very few apps. I just don't need much more than the few I have. I am a deleter of photos as well, only keeping really important ones. I do use my phone as my primary music player though, and even still I am only using 10.5 with 18.5 left.
