Why couldn’t they have gone with USB-C?

I think they are going to milk this one last cycle and then move to USB-C next Gen due to EU pressures.

That really does make me wonder if i should wait a year. Travelling with multiple cables is annoying.

Apple Watch series 8 is for people who don't want to die, the ultra is for people who do.

Watch ultra is a bust at 799. Garmin has that area covered and way better specs.

iPhone looks like a zilch upgrade

APP is disappointing for old APP users.

Watch 8 is nothing.

Big flop.

Alternative:
Buy a usb-c to lightning adapter (or microUSB, or whatever it is that you’re using), assuming you’re just using your cable to charge.

I love my little “travel bag” that I put together a year or so ago. Wife was always losing/moving/forgetting to pack cables. I typically travel with a booksack. So in my booksack, I put two GaN chargers, color-coded 10ft USB-C, lightning, and usb A to C, chargers. I have a thunderbolt dock (supported by both our laptops), hdmi (I need to put a longer one in there), Ethernet cable.
Then we have a pair of headphones each (Etymotic ER4 on an airplane are game changers), a headphone splitter so we can watch something from the airplane (yeah, I have that dumb adapter in there, too, for those dumb planes that still use it) together or from an ipad (which of course means I have a lightning to headphone adapter that is capable of charging as well)

We’re not really international travelers, but we did take a trip across the pond. There’s a nifty little plug adapter that has 2x usb C and 3x usb-A ports (I think it’s a 45w charger) and fits most major country plugs (at least all of Europe, Australia), so there are a pair of them in there, too.

Other than a longer HDMI cable, I’ve debated buying or going find a microUSB of any significant length just for the weird random baby thing that’s going to need to charge off it, but it just seems unnecessary, and I’m sort of testing how long I can go without it.

All these parts go in this bag and stay in this bag. There is a compartment for “her” stuff and “my” stuff- it’s all exactly the same, but by separating it, it’s very easy to keep track of. Same with the coloration.

Of special note: one charger with 10ft cable is sufficient for a standard nightstand/bedside wall plug to reach across a King bed.

So, buy an adapter or a dedicated set of “travel cables” and forget about it. And don’t let a charger decide if you need a new phone or not. Don’t upgrade if you don’t need it. Don’t plan on Apple doing anything timely or that useful at some future date, because they love to move at their own speed.

Why? Ultra can do 100 more things than the Garmin can.

I actually thought they'd price it at 999$.

It's an initial go at the Suunto and Garmin's of the world. It's more of a smartwatch than those being more of outdoor tools but it's Apple's first foray into that sector of the market.

Spending $ on watches is nothing new. Most people do it on mechanical watches as they're works of art that don't have a degrading battery, however, times are a changing.

Like what? Barely scratches Garmin battery life. Garmin has way more metrics it uses in activity tracking. Built-in topographic maps, Solar charging, much better sleep tracking, and the ability to use more external instruments.

I'm glad Apple got into the more rugged watches but they should have figured out the battery life thing. They could have easily added a solar charging feature and added a second type of display that is not OLED so that it is more battery efficient.

I would love this to beat out the Garmin and maybe it will with software updates but battery life on it is a killer.

My guess is this is targeted toward existing Apple Watch users who want a do it all watch and don't want a high end Fenix+AW. I'm guessing that's why it's priced as it is, if it was 999 I think it'd be harder to make the case.

If you're all Apple then AW is superior to Garmin for every day life by a wide margin, so I assume that's the selling point. Get most of the Garmin functionality in a operating package you're familiar with with no drop off from the normal AW functions you rely on.

That's a good point.

I have a two-watch setup however.

Mechanical watch during work and similar activities

Garmin Fenix for after work and working out.

Still have a AW3 I still use from time to time

Can't imagine what the ultra will look like in work settings.

Does it make phone calls? Look at the Garmin App store and look at Apple store apps...I understand the point you're trying to make, but it's still an Apple watch with all that myriad functionality. And now with the Ultra look at all it can do.

ETA: iOs 16 just dropped.

Ok, well, Garmin is on like what the 9x? Apple is now just into the 1st series of watches that comes close to same size and potential battery. Also, Garmin watches displays look like shite compared to apple - that's not a knock just an explanation as to why the normal series/smaller watches don't have as long of batteries.

Not sure that's true anymore, especially with the new ios and applewatch os coming out

Garmin kicks its arse at solar charging but best believe that's next (or soon for apple watches).

Garmin makes great watches, I used to rock like a fenix 3 a long time ago. I just think this new apple watch is for folks that already have apple watches and iphones and want a more rugged watch.

Really expected this to be the year I upgrade my Series 3 but the 8 is disappointing. Nearly no new features from the 7. Ultra is too much for my needs. SE would probably be fine but plan to keep any new product several years and I think the SE would be old by then.

Guess I'll wait until the Series 9.

Pretty up the opposite of what the market is saying. At 799 they are already back ordered into November. People expected this at 999. Apple will always be king, sure there are plenty of workout centric watches that are better for some segments, but they are not an addition to your ecosystem that fit in seamlessly. Like you just stated you have to switch watches out based on what you need. That is where apple is beginning to excel. It can stay powered for three days, make a phone call and is a solid fitness device. For 90% of people that is what they want.
