The main thing that seems questionable about this format is that it does not simply place the lowest ranked European team in Pot 2 (as had been rumored) instead of randomly drawing that team from Pot 4.
That there has already been a somewhat controversial decision in seeding that kept Holland and Italy out of the first pot, this means that there is no assurance they now both can't end up with Brazil (or Argentina, Colombia) in a group.
That would be a group with 3 teams that would have been first pot seeds with the seeding method used in the last WC!
Not only is that pretty unfair to the USA or Japan or whoever gets drawn into that group but probably even more unfair to the South American side that gets punished for having a top seed.

Why would you say that re Jozy and Uruguay?

Absolutely awful situation. I feel like FIFA will rig this though. They won't allow the Group of ALL DEATHS: Brazil, Netherlands, Italy, USA.
Remember last World Cup when people thought the South Africa group would be a joke? Ended up being France, Uruguay, and Mexico.

The Sunderland manager is Gus Poyet from, you guessed it, Uruguay.

Maybe, or even hopefully, so.
To me, it was already kind of unfair to other teams that FIFA changed the seeding rules so that Italy and Holland are in Pot 4. Now, opening a door to both being in different lower pots is crazy.
Added to all the Brazilians protesting the way public funds have been used in the WC preparation, you'd likely have twice as many more protesting FIFA if Brazil drew this group as a host.
If Brazil did draw Holland and Italy and somehow didn't advance, they may have to move the rest of matches.

Stadiums taken to the torch. Quick move to the US.

With the new pot rules I got
Spain, Ecuador, USA, Portugal
Is this worst case scenario?

No. As has been said numerous times, worst case scenario is that the European team from Pot 4 that is moved matches up with Brazil or Argentina. Then a power in Pot 4.
A couple of examples:
Brazil, Netherlands, USA, Portugal
Argentina, Netherlands, USA, Italy

I just read an article on FIFA rankings which had the teams seeded based on competitive results if friendlies were removed:
1 Spain
2 Brazil
3 Germany
4 Argentina
5 Netherlands
6 Italy
7 Belgium
8 Chile
The significant difference is mainly due to the fact that merely scheduling friendlies against lower ranked teams drastically brings down the points.
The article is an Italian newspaper so no link but I think the ideas are borrowed from a Romanian computer programmer named Eduard Ranghiuc who has some rankings blogspot. Anyway, it made the point that the Netherlands and Italy fell from the top 8 due almost exclusively to friendlies against Indonesia and San Marino / Puerto Rico.
It made an interesting point that teams shouldn't necessarily stop playing such friendlies in WC years since much of the reason they do so is to help smaller nations' teams develop.
However, it suggested that the glamour boys (to borrow from Ray Hudson) simply do things like use too many substitutes to make the results unofficial and therefore not count in FIFA rankings until they change the formula.
No real point but I just found it interesting since sports rankings fascinate me. Among other things, that the impetus to make them objective is always necessarily grounded in the "subjective" lends itself to interesting conversation.

You lot forget, it's already decided, the pots are all for show. U.S. will be in a killer group or g.o.d. for certain.
But you forget, we WILL end up with Ghana. Book it. And most likely, it'll be the third match in group play which will, likely, end our run.

You act like we didn't draw the easiest group known to man in 2010.

Which is why we're fricked this year.

Yeah, but not because we got an easy draw in 2010.

What's your go to site for WC news?
Posted on 12/6/13 at 7:35 am to BraveTiger225
Nervous as frick today.
Will I be leaving work early to hit the bar and celebrate?
Or will I intentionally pry open the 14th floor elevator doors and say goodbye to this cruel world as I tumble down an elevator shaft?
Here's to the former.
