First off I'll say I know nothing about soccer nor do I know anything about the qualifying process. I enjoyed watching the match tonight even though we lost.

What do we have to do in order to qualify? I see we are currently 2-4-2.

We are actually 2-3-2 right now. If we end up 2-4-2 after Tuesday, I'll be a lot more concerned.

Basically, we just need to finish better than Honduras and Panama to earn the 3rd place spot, and they happen to be our next two opponents. Losing tonight and playing like we did puts the panic sirens back on standby again.

Our game Tuesday against Honduras isn't a 100% must-win game, but it's pretty damn close. Losing any of the remaining 3 games might cause us to finish 4th, which likely means a playoff against an Asian team in the Middle East to get to the World Cup.

We need to be top 4 of the 6 team hexagonal in order to qualify. 3rd, where we are, is automatic qualifying. 4th = a playoff with the 5th placed Asian team.

As of right now we have 8 points, as do Honduras (with much worse goal differential), and Panama have 7. We play Honduras in Honduras on the fifth, and Panama plays at home against Trinidad and Tobago. The picture will be clearer after those games.

Yup, top 3 qualify. 4th place team gets to play the 5th place team from AFC(Asia) for the last spot.

Obviously, we want to be in the top 3, but it really doesnt matter where as long as we make it.

We will qualify, we're just trying to Mexico our ways into it.

Does finishing 1,2,3 or 4 in qualifying affect your position in the World Cup? Thanks

Only as far as it impacts our FIFA ranking, but that number is also impacted by the number of chickens you sacrificed that day, so...

You're taking the road qualifiers for granted.

In our road qualifiers this cycle, we are currently 1-3-2 with a goal differential of 0. Take out the win over Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and its 0-3-2 with a goal differential of -6.

If we lose in Honduras, which is entirely possible, our chances of automatic qualification becomes very slim and we would almost certainly have to win both of our final two games to make the international playoff.

Considering Panama plays the worst team in the Hex on Tuesday, I really think the Honduras game is a must win. The likelihood that Panama is on 10 points after next game is very high

Agreed. Panama is the bigger threat to bump us from that 3rd spot. We will have to beat them at home to control our own fate, even if we can beat Honduras on Tuesday. Lucky for us, they missed a golden chance to steal a point in Azteca last night.

The only way I can see Honduras passing us is if they beat us, since their last two games are brutal. And remember we have a huge GD margin over them in case of a tiebreaker.

Mexico is through and Costa Rica can be after Tuesday. How hard do you think they will play to help us?

Not hard at all, but I would be surprised if Honduras wins either of those games even against backups. They know Tuesday against us is their best hope to qualify, so they're gonna go all out. We need to be ready. The 6-0 shouldn't give us any false confidence.
