Do you know the difference between friendlies and competitions? We can beat Holland and Germany on the road when it doesn't matter, but can't beat minnows at home when it does? Why is that ok?

Because we were at the USSF's gate with pitchforks and torches demanding Bradley be fired. Jurgen was the longshot dream hire to turn the program around and little more than a month ago we were singing his praises.

Why was he viewed as this?

I, nor many on this board were ecstatic about the hire.

Is it because he is german?

Seriously, what was his allure?

Well... he has certainly done that.

Here's the SB thread from the day Jurgen was hired: LINK

Lot of cautious optimism and a few negative posts. No one was really, really, really excited.

You don't seriously remember? He was the only European manager with legit credentials who knew a damn thing about the American system. He was supposed to be the best of both worlds and for a while it seemed like it was paying dividends. He actually had a name that was at least a B in world football. He went on a hot recruiting streak flipping Mexican and German youngsters to our side.

He was the coach that God had seemingly created just for us but we were stuck with Bradley getting "ok" results, just enough to get by. We were like a man in a dying marriage looking over at this hot thing with seemingly all the right features. We knew it would be a gamble, it could go totally wonderful or off a cliff, but we'd were willing to go all in.

To your credit, I don't remember the online community exactly peeing their pants as much as the soccer analysts and talking heads acting like we just hired Saban.

Idk if I would say bullet proof even though it looks that way. I honestly think that there are glimpses of us not being a laughing stock in world soccer that is enough to keep him around. I could be wrong but IMHO that's what I think it is.

This was not a glimpse of improvement. This was pretty bad but I guess the friendly wins over the Netherlands and Germany are good enough to show improvement I don't know. It's frustrating to think we can beat world powers but not Jamaica and Panama. It's just extremely frustrating and I don't understand it.

Any thought of the US as a laughing stock pretty much ended when that cross found Brian McBride's head in Suwon in 2002.

We're working our way back, though.

Bob Bradley led us to a Confederations cup final and won a World Cup group. Bruce arena led us to a World Cup quarterfinals and a #3 world ranking. Jurgen has accomplished less with a deeper pool.

ETA: Jurgen's biggest accomplishment is riding Landon Donovan to a Gold Cup win.

I'm with yall on wanting Jurgen gone, but predictably yall have gone completely off the cliff with the nonsense.

Yeah, that's demonstratively false. We were pathetic loads of times under those two.
