I ran into some British Futbal fans in Thailand and talked some soccer with them. I told them that there was a real shift in soccer in the US and that we'd be significantly competitive in the 2022 WC...they stated that they thought we'd be really good in 2018 and they said, "I'll do you one better...the US will win a World Cup before we do." I was dumbfounded.

He's the new Theo Walcott.
Not at all alike. Walcott has been insanely productive since 2010. Near double digit goals and assists each season he's been fully fit.
Ox is a fantastic dribbler who is closer to Wilshere than Walcott. Ox needs the ball at his feet which is pretty much the opposite of Walcott.

England is A LOT closer, but they're near their full potential. We can still expect to improve dramatically over the years.

Most definitely England. The US is far behind England technically. England is a coherent coach away from being a top side. The English problem is one of mentality rather than technique, although the English are deficient of technique when compared to continental players, although I think that gap is diminishing.

I disagree. Tactically they are in the stone age. They could improve quite a bit just by trying to play the best side rather than fit every English player who plays for a top 6 club into the team.

So do we if we are being completely honest. Hence why we should reserve the same skepticism for our team as well.
And in England they are spending way more on youth. They have a structure in place to institute large scale change. Our structure is in its infancy, and might not ever be all that efficient.

Well obviously they have turned it around a bit then. They were not much for a long time.
Also, unless they have really expanded Top Hat North, they are in a landlocked tiny park and can't sustain consistent excellence because they are (or at least were) pretty small compared to some clubs.

This was kind of my thought too. The sport is obviously king in England therefor every young lad across the country is playing, and while I would agree they are definitely closer as it stands now it appears they are at their ceiling and still too far away. It just feels like the U.S. Is in its infancy still, and having a league that fans can support and grow with should only help.
I'm also wondering just how huge it is that the majority of our players are mid upper mid class suburban types? Do we need the sport to catch on in lower income urban environments? Or is that irrelevant, and skill development is the only thing truly lacking? Is there already a large enough pool of talented athletes for the USA?

After the atrocious display in the GC, I don't see how the US is even close to the English in terms of technique. Saying English players have better technique than American players shouldn't be that controversial. At the same time, the difference between Spanish and English players might be greater than English and American.
Surely on paper you could see them as a top ten team in the world. Getting them to play that way is another story.

Imagine if Lebron was a keeper and NFL WR types started and stuck with soccer. Then add some NBA power forwards as defenders.
Stamina would be the issue but we have the athletes to win a WC now. We just don't have the opportunities & infrastructure to keep those athletes interested in soccer ($) after grade school.
