i was watching al jazeera this morning and they reported that the salaries are collectively bargained by the USWNT

this suit is probably just leverage for the new deal they have to negotiate in a short bit

i'm not a legal scholar in this area but i can't imagine a collectively bargained deal could be attacked via the EEOC

Basically USWNT makes bank with WC and Olympics + Victory Tours. Other two years, not so much, although I'd imagine they'll do some sort of summer tour/tournament annually now to make money.

and there you have it

the extra bullshite like victory tours that the women's team make money on, while the men are in preseason camp/ European season just started or in the middle of their MLS season. Even if the men won the WC there would not be time for that extra bullshite.

i do think one of the stronger arguments deals with the power club teams have over these selections and the risks involved

a real evening of the gap means less money for men which may severely impact our national team pool

I don't know any details so I can't really comment on the overall issues. One thing I can say from the personal experience of going to quite a few USWNT matches: the corporate marketing to the thousands of teenage and pre-teen girls (which most seem to claim is the #1 target group) at the women's matches is on a completely different scale than anything I've seen at the men's matches.

Now time for the reality check for people

No one gives a shite about the women's game, except teenage and young girls, women who played growing up, feminist and parents of daughters who play that take their little girls to see their hero's. Nothing wrong with any of that but the women's game demographic is much smaller and its even smaller abroad.

Don't you know it's sexist to say things like this. This is a safe space

It's not the fault of the USWNT that they can do a Victory Tour, while the men can't even qualify for the Olympics.

it would be impossible for the men to have a victory tour

all friendlies and qualifiers are supposed to fall under the international calendar.

No way clubs will let their players do a fricking victory tour of matches when the season just started or MLS is near the playoffs.

Now I'm trying to figure out where I fit in this list.

Bingo. And they're also arguing, somehow, that the current CBA is already expired or invalid. I think they're just striking while the iron is hot. They generated a frickton of revenue last year, and are projected to do so again this year, while the next two years could be dry.

journo pass

it pays the bills

I think most soccer fans would be a casual watcher of the womens team. Most don't go out there way to watch like we do with the men.

This may or may not be true, but even if it is, that's still a very profitable audience, as evidenced by the $26.7 million the USWNT generated last year.

They want and deserve a pay raise. They may actually want equal pay, but that's an argument akin to (yet on a different scale from) saying NBA players and WNBA players should get equal pay.

But I'd guess they'll settle for a nice raise that evens things out more.

exactly why it should be judged over a four year cycle

the Copa America will generate way more money than the women's soccer event at the Olympics.

Does anyone have financial figures going back to mens World Cup years? For both men and women. I'm sure they're both cyclical and was wondering if men's high years are higher than women's high years and if womens low years are lower.

Maybe it's been posted already but this article makes a lot of sense.

LINK

Also, I'm sure these so called more "progressive" countries aren't paying their women as much as the men.

What's the 5 year revenue average for both teams?

of course not

the national teams even in big soccer nations are not paying big.

The only club coughing up big ladies wages is Man City.

The women's pro league in America in the next few years will be passed by the one in England. The clubs who do have ladies teams can afford to pay the wages off the back of the men and their tv deals. While the women's entire league are subsided by the USSF. In time the best players in the world will come to England to play and that includes American girls, which has already happened. The ladies league here even has a national tv deal with matches on BT all summer long.

Hope Solo ain't helping here...
quote:

The numbers speak for themselves,” Solo said in the statement. “We are the best in the world, have three World Cup Championships, four Olympic Championships, and the USMNT get paid more just to show up than we get paid to win major championships.”
