Realistically, do you think USMNT will make a World Cup final in your lifetime?

Upon some research it was surprising to me that Spain's victory in 2010 was their first trip to a WC final, also fairly surprising that of 8 possible participants in this millenium, only Germany has made more than one final.

I imagine this topic has been beaten to death, but I wanted to gauge the confidence or lack thereof of the people that are much more knowledgable than myself. On paper it appears that there's somewhat of a cyclical nature to it, recently anyway. Granted a handful of nations seem to appear over and over, and we are a long way away from being mentioned with the likes of Germany and Brazil, do you believe? Are any of the guys on our youth squads potentially legitimate world class players? And if not do we have enough that may be close to it?

Short answer, extremely unlikely but not impossible.

Yes. Each youth class we have keeps getting better. I don't think we have many world class players about to break through soon, but we will improve with each cycle.

Agreed, it's all about getting hot at the right time. I.E. 2009 Confed Cup. We were down and out after losses to Italy and Brazil and had to sneak into the knockout round on GD and ultimately beat Spain and almost upset Brazil.

The talent pool is only getting better and I personally believe that by 2022-2030 we could be a darkhorse.

I plan upon living forever, so it's only a matter of time

But, realistically, maybe

I'm no soccer expert but I certainly think so. Soccer is becoming more and more popular which is great for the youth game. Getting more kids and better development is huge and should go a long way for the US.

I think we have a fairly good shot at it. I can't say for certain we will get to a final but I can almost guarantee we will have the talent to do so 20 plus years down the road.

If Greece can win a Euro, then the USMNT can win a World Cup.

With my luck it will happen when I am too far gone to realize it happened. We are getting better though.

I'll root like hell for us, but I don't expect that it will happen before I die.

I'm going to say no chance. I'm in my late 20s right now. Let's say I live 44 more years until I'm in my early 70s. Let's look at all the World Cup finalists in the last 44 years.

Germany-6
Brazil-4
Italy-4
Argentina-4
Netherlands-3
France-2
Spain-1

Basically, all of the finalists are either elite powerhouses who are threats to go deep in every World Cup (Brazil, Italy, Germany, Argentina) or have had many legendary club teams and players over the years (Spain, France, Netherlands). Now there have been a number of semifinalists from non-traditional footballing countries so the U.S. might be able to make the semis with a favorable draw but there hasn't been a finalist from a country that isn't a football power in a very long time. I don't see it happening.

I could definitely see it. Ask me 15 years ago if I thought the US would be dominating beer in a decade and I'd have thought you were nuts. We tend to go huge on things that catch fire in America, and I wouldn't be surprised if soccer was one of them.

I'm not predicting it, but it certainly seems like something that America would do. We don't really languish once the interest is there.

I believe if we would have had Costa ricas draw and jozy not getting hurt we could have made the final last year. We were close to winning in the knock out round really should have if wondo could tap in a goal. We are not that far off from being a semi finalist and just like with the confed cup anything can happen.

I think that's a bit of a stretch, but it is only a hypothetical. I think if we had Costa Rica's draw then we get bounced by the Netherlands, but you never know.

I will say this, I think we can compete with anyone, it just depends on which team shows up that day.

Considering I'll probably be around for 18 more world cups I think we've got a decent chance.

That's assuming I live until 100, which is the real challenge considering how much I drink.

Im not sure if any country outside of Europe and South America have made a final. The only 2 semifinalists were USA (1930) and South Korea (2002) unless I've forgotten another.

We did come fairly close ourselves in 2002 but lost 1-0 to Germany in the handball game. That could have set up USA/SK winner to the final vs. Brazil.
