Basically, all of the finalists are either elite powerhouses who are threats to go deep in every World Cup
You gotta say though, USA isn't like other countries. Our league is 20 years old and it's on a path to be great in 15-20 years.

Unexpected teams can make deep runs. Just takes a little luck with being in the right place at the right time.
Just look at Croatia, South Korea, Turkey, and greece to name a few.

Also US got fricked by the ref in 2002. If they wouldve beaten germany who knows what couldve happened.

If we do then the biggest reasons would be that we develop enough depth, have one world class player, and biggest of all, that we get the lucky draws.
I could see that happening about 5 or so WC. I might be optimistic, but I think we are making huge strides in our dept, and we will develop one world class player (not saying a Messi or Ronoldo, but more like a Rooney).

Unless you are one of like 5 countries the answer to this question is no.

I mean I see what you're saying but was Spain viewed as one of those 5 teams 15-20 years ago? I'm asking because I don't know, maybe they were always really good and choked in the cup until 2010, or maybe they were always a middle of the road squad that has made huge strides in recent years, if it's the latter then I'm not sure why we can't do the same.

Thats not the right question. The right question would be "could Spaniards realistically think they would make a world cup final 15-20 years ago?"

They were seen as a country who consistently had talented teams but previous to that point had never broken through at the World Cup.

I'm 27. I plan to live to 90+. I say yes, the USMNT will make a World Cup final in my lifetime. I think in 3 generations' time (if not sooner) soccer will be a massive sport in the US. With our population size and diversity, the high quality of athletes we produce, and our country's addiction to sports and sporting excellence, I think it is a very real possibility. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised to see it within 40 years' time.
60 years - that's 15 World Cups. I like our chances.

But, as the popularity of the game continues to rise in America (I believe it will), I think we'll be able to put more and more quality players on the pitch.
Germany-6
Brazil-4
Italy-4
Argentina-4
Netherlands-3
France-2
Spain-1

Not a snowballs chance in hell.

Two countries that have really come up lately are Belgium and Chile. I still we are just as likely of going to a final than they are.

I do think if any team not in Europe or South America wins the cup it will be us. It will be in a year we host like England (66) or France (98). FIFA is a fickle crooked whore though.

I am optimistic it could happen.
Just looking at recent tournament successes, we have proven we can play with and even beat a world class squad. Debate the merits of the Confed Cup, but beating Spain and taking it to Brazil for a half counts for something. It would probably take two wins over top caliber squads like that in the knock out round. Right now, I think we could get one on a good day in a World Cup but wouldn't be confident in a second big win.
It will probably take some breaks with the draw as well. SuperSoakher mentioned teams who made surprise runs and a little coulda-woulda-shoulda here but the 2002 Semi-Final matchup would've been against South Korea had we got past Germany. On South Korea's home soil sure, but they aren't exactly a world soccer power. The other semifinal that year had Turkey in it.
Winning our group would also be a big help in the future. The group runner-ups in the past World Cup were far more favorable round of 16 matchups on paper than pretty much every group winner. The gauntlet in Brazil would've been Belgium, Argentina, and Netherlands to reach the final and that is a tough ask of anyone.

We did come fairly close ourselves in 2002 but lost 1-0 to Germany in the handball game. That could have set up USA/SK winner to the final vs. Brazil.
If they don't botch that call I think we play SK in the semis and get to the final. So yes, I think this happening in my lifetime is a definite possibility. And if Michael Bradley doesn't get a BS phantom red card at the end of that Spain game and plays against Brazil in the CC final, I honestly think we win it. God damn FIFA refs and their USA hate. It's fricking retarded. 2002, 2009, 2010 (Slovenia), 2014 (5 mins ET against Portugal and 1 against Belgium).
As far as players in our current pool with world class potential, it's so hard to guess, but if I had to put my money on anyone I would put it on Mukwelle Akale.
Y'all should read Soccernomics. You can expect the US and Japan to become soccer powers if our progression continues like-so for the next 25 years.
Also, saying that there is no chance in hell that we make a WC final is overly pessimistic. Anything is possible in futbol. Plus, Americans have a work ethic that is often not seen in Europeans, and I think this is why we tend to "punch above our weight" in tournaments.

I'll be surprised if we don't. I expect the USA will win at least one World Cup in my lifetime. We don't even do a good job developing our talent and we've started making huge steps forward. If we revamp our youth system we could be a legitimate contender in a generation.

With our population size and diversity
This is where the chance lies. The US is the 3rd largest country in the world by population. Germany, for instance, has 80 million folks. Our country still has ample room and ability to grow its population as well.
So, even if we don't get full soccer adoption here, the numbers start to work in our favor.
We're also gaining a significant Latino population whose #1 sport isn't football or basketball.

Be like Germany and Brazil?
Probably never.
World class youth players?
Probably not, but I guess Zelalem has a chance. I like Pusilic a ton. To me, Donovan looked world class at his best. I don't think we have ever had another player close to his level.
Do we have enough quality?
Probably not.
Overall, I doubt we win a World Cup, but I sure hope so. I think our progress is over exaggerating on this board.

I could definitely see it. Ask me 15 years ago if I thought the US would be dominating beer in a decade and I'd have thought you were nuts. We tend to go huge on things that catch fire in America, and I wouldn't be surprised if soccer was one of them.
I'm not predicting it, but it certainly seems like something that America would do. We don't really languish once the interest is there.
This is a solid point. This is America, when we want something we're gonna fricking get it dammit. And now more than ever, we want soccer.
