yeah, bad weekend...
Liverpool loss to Chelsea....
LSU loss to Bama, in OT....
Saints loss to 49ers, in OT...
well, the sun will still rise tomorrow, and in the grand scheme of life, those results really don't mean much.... in fact, just watching my healthy little girl sleeping peacefully means soooooo much more than this weekend's results...

That said, as a great of a job that he did last season, this one has been underwhelming... partly due to the selection of players, whether that be through injury or the players he bought (or didn't buy).. But, I really have no problem with the younger guys because I think Markovic, Can, Moreno, Manquillo and Origi all have huge upsides... I hope he is around to see them develop..
Bingo!
BR is a tactical genius. His system is effective, practical, modern. It gets the best out of players who aren't supremely talented (Henderson, Allen), yet it also lets tactical, creative players shine (Coutinho, Sterling).
But let's recall last season's XI. It picked itself for weeks on end. When everyone was healthy, we knew what the side would be week-in and week-out. Gerrard, Henderson, Allen/Coutinho in midfield, Sturridge, Sterling, Suarez in attack. Every week. There was no bench to factor in. No rotation possibilities.
Fast forward to this season. He now has a full squad, but he doesn't know what the best XI is. Lallana or Coutinho? Sterling or Markovic? Can? Borini? Sakho? Who does he play? He doesn't know yet, and I think that is taking away from his time spent gameplanning against teams.
The Tottenham game is the only one where we flat out exploited the other team. Last season we did it for weeks on end.
Hopefully when Sturridge returns this will fix itself a little bit. Sturridge and Balotelli should be the automatic selections, which means a more defensive, balanced midfield. Hopefully this leads to less options, and more time spent gameplanning against the opponent.

Well we're coming up on our favorite time of the year again when the transfer window opens in January.
Just today we have rumors linking us to Isco and Begovic, Cabaye and Roberts, Jackson Martinez, and Will Carvalho
I think most of it is BS although I think we've been scouting Roberts for a while, but he's still young. And I seriously doubt it, but Carvalho would be a huge buy and a statement to the rest of the league IMO. I'm all for keeping Gerrard around, but we know we have to start preparing to move on and give him less game time. This would give us a true, big DM that could break up play and control the midfield while allowing us to commit numbers in attack.
Anyways this was just pretty much a shameless bump to add a little more discussion.

While Roberts seems to be a great talent, he is not what we should be focused on (or Alli)... Unless we just have a totally separate budget dedicated to buying youth..
Of those names.. Carvalho, Martinez and Begovic would be my priorities... in that order...

I'm not that impressed by Martinez. Sure he would probably fit our system better than our other strikers not named Sturridge, but if we did go get a striker, I'd like a bigger name or someone who could make a big impact immediately.
And right now as far as our spending, I'm ok with still going after some young names because I think that's our big chance to bag some big talent before they get too expensive for us and are typically less of a financial risk, but we are seeing the price for these youngsters start to rise pretty substantially. Marovic, Can, Origi, Manquillo, and Moreno I think will all be important pieces especially for the future, but you can also see how their prices spike quickly.
I'm rambling, but in short, now that we have more depth looking for final pieces, I'd like to see us concentrate on one or two big names, but I'm ok spending ~£10m or so on promising youngsters

I like Martinez, but he's not a guarantee. He is big, strong and a good finisher... a pure #9. I think he COULD make an impact, but...
I didn't read the article, but I'm assuming they'd want close to £30mm for him? I'm not sure that's who I would target, I was strictly going off the names you mentioned.. We have also been linked to Seydou Doumbia recently, and I think he is tailor made for the EPL at a much better bargain.. ~£15mm. I love Berahino... but at £25mm, I don't know if we can gamble on him (plus we have Origi coming next season). I really do think we'll see much better out of Mario when Studge is back.
I don't mind getting young talent, but we are starting to get a back log of them, with very little to offer in terms of development (playing time)... I don't think we have the luxury of doing what Chelsea has done with some of the young talent they've bought over the years... But I get its a catch 22. Not so sure Jan. is the time to do that either..
I agree that we should focus on a couple of impact players that are ready to contribute immediately..

And I'm really starting to like the idea of Origi. Not that I didn't like him before, but his positioning and comfort playing out wide makes me think he'll be a perfect fit with Sturridge in our 4-4-2 diamond. They can both run channels, drop deep, get behind, and give options as a wide forward opening spaces for Sterling and one of the midfielders to run forward. And Origi seems somewhat comfortable creating for others from wide positions (something we have missed without Suarez)

Yeah, Origi has the potential to be great... I watched him against Everton last week and he had absolutely no service.. Lille is garbage...
Again, some of things you mentioned about Origi, I think Daniel will open that up and bring the best out of Mario... I was listening to TalkSport today and they had on John Aldridge and we was talking about Mario... He said he isn't a classic CF getting on the end of balls in the box, he likes to drop deep and play wide... he's not comfortable playing on the shoulder of the last defender.. and its evident on how often he's offside...
On another note, I think Borini will be gone (possibly in Jan if we bring in another striker) and Lambert may be a one and done...

Yea Balotelli is the type of forward that when you're getting behind the defense or at the byline, he's waiting for the cutback, not going to the near post.
And while we're on that, I HATE that no one on this team since Suarez left is willing to get to the byline. Suarez was great at causing havoc in those tight spaces and picking out passes, but that's just a dangerous area in general that can cause a defense to break down, and we never look to get the ball there.
I know we're not gonna get it out wide to break and put in a low, hard cross. But we just struggle to get behind the back 4 right now, period.

I'm sure if they could get in those dangerous spots they would
Fact is, no one is good enough to do it. Suarez was a talent

Suarez is a massive talent. And he understands the game on a much deeper level than Mario. He understands spacing - he knows how to draw a defender into the field or into the channels. He knows where the space will open for himself or a teammate before it happens.
Mario simply isn't at that level. Doesn't mean he can't still turn into a great player, but he needs a striking partner who has that vision, or some tremendous wide players who will twist the space, open runs for him, and give him service.

Yeah, IMO Mario isn't the type of player to put a team on his shoulders and carry them (like Suarez)... But, if the right pieces are in place to allow him to do what he does best, he can be a very effective player and score goals..

Been backpacking SE Asia the past 2 months so I haven't had time to post, but I haven't missed a match. Hopefully I can find my way home before Christmas and watch a match at Finn's before the New Year.

Sturridge back training and now swag sent home from notably camp due to a hamstring issue

Hopefully the week will give him enough time to heal. I'm more nervous about the England-Slovenia match about to start. Playing on a torn up pitch due to the stupid NFL game last week.
