I don't think its a full rebuild, since we have a lot of pieces in place. I hope to see a big improvement out of Markovic, Moreno, Lallana and Can (as a MFer)... I'm not counting on any significant improvement out of Lovren and I think Origi will be too green to contribute much

quote:

In fact, I support it, so long as both Balotelli and Skrtel are kept, Ibe is a permanent starter on the right, and we get QUALITY midfield/defensive depth.

I don't mind keeping those two, but I could live if they left. The former is way more likely to go. I still think its WAY too early to count on Ibe to be in the regular eleven.. He showed a lot of promise, but over only a handful of games..

In regards to the summer, even though I realize we must be flexible, I'd love to know what system BR is trying to build for... I have to assume a 4231 or 433.. I still think the 3 at the back was out of desperation on his part (and it worked for a time)..

Agreed, getting rid of Skrtel and Balo would piss me off. Especially Skrtel. He still has a lot of value and has been loyal to the club. He's a top CB, I don't care what anyone says. He's not a sexy choice, but he gets it done.

Why aren't we ever linked with Benteke? Why isn't anyone for that matter?

I'd sign him for 30M in a heartbeat. He's way more than just a dominant force in the air. Dude has added a lot to his game the last 2-3 years.

I like Origi, and would like to see him get spot time, but that is about it. Let Borini/Lambert go, get another striker, and then focus on defensive players. I always forget Can is a MF guy. I also enjoyed Lallana and Allen's play, but Allen I don't think is our answer to the midfield woes.

If we could put Sterling (if we pay him) on the left, Hendo and Can in the middle two slots, and Lallana on the right (or Ibe), with Coutinho/Balo/Studge up top, I would be a happy man.

Of course that depends on how many defenders we bring in this transfer window. To me, that is our most glaring weakness right now. We have 2 guys that are usually solid (Skrtel/Can), one of them always being an anchor for the defensive end (Skrtel). Everyone else is absolute garbage on the back line.

Sakho is crazy and makes stupid decisions. Toure? Lovren can't shoot or defend, but has played better than normal the past two games. Johnson is terrible unless he pushes forward (he is generally good when he is high up and making runs). Who else do we have to defend? I don't even consider Manquillo a part of the squad...

It is abysmal, and I consider it to be the PRIMARY reason we play so many people out of position, i.e. Hendo.

Umm....no. I disagree. Sakho is a good with a chance to be grat CB and if we buy to replace him in the starting lineup, or sell him, I will be very upset.

He came out in an interview a couple of weeks ago and said his summer buys were made with the diamond in mind. FWIW.

Sakho is borderline world class and arguably the best player at the club outside of Cou and possibly Sterling and Henderson.

I think Sakho is our best defender, too... He looks awkward, but so what...

His main issue is, he does happen to play the careless pass every now and then... that he HAS to stop doing... IMO, that is correctable (he is still relatively young for a CB).. All in all, I think he's our best ball playing CB out of the group..

My other issue is that he's prone to pick up little nicks, that keep him out, every couple of months..

Skrtel is an average CB IMO, but the one quality he has that is so valuable is his durability... he's an iron man..

Maybe I pay too much attention to his retarded passes and not his good qualities. I don't remember him giving up any dumb chances on goal, I just remember cussing him more (for wonky, bad passes) than I remember being impressed by anything he did this year. Forgive me

On the flip side of that post...

LINK

Skrtel is close to signing an extension, and both he and his agent have put down rumors of his transfer to Napoli or Wolfsburg.

Other than Sakho, I feel I was pretty much spot on.

ETA: Studge has been given a tailored fitness regime in hopes of quelling his injury bug in the future.

Yea WTF.

Homie needs to re-check his eval on Sakho. He's a huge reason for our run of form and not allowing goals.

He's by far our best defender. And it's not even close.

He'd start on just about every EPL backline. People give him shite cuz he looks a little forced and awkward.

So what for the 15th time in his career?

They've been saying that shite forever. He need Arjen Robben's fitness guy. Except ironically, I think he is hurt again.

Bruh, I took it back!

I just hate how awkard he is... And also his late, bad idea passes. When it comes to his defense in and of himself, I was wrong, he is very good. I do get nervous when he gets the ball passed to him from the midfield, though.

Spurs fans seem to think he's a target for them

Benteke is a fricking beast. Belgium may have made a run to the WC final with him in the lineup.

Yeah he's certainly prone to some dumbassery with those passes. I think part of it is Rodgers though. Sakho is clearly our "passing" back (as Emre is the back to bring the ball out) and so I think he has this pressure to always make a great pass to the holding MF. He needs to just relax and take what is given him.

Glad you guys stuck up for sakho. I was about to respond before reading the whole thread but decided to read through. He's awkward at times, but defends well.

He also delivers some great balls forward - and importantly on the ground. I hate seeing a cb spot a lane and thread a chest high pass to a guy that's found an opening past a midfielder. After trapping the high ball, the defense has recovered and it was all for nothing. Sakho puts that pass beautifully on the ground right to Cou or hendo's feet and a chance forward is created.

As for Balo - I'd love for him to get a chance. But if he won't - sell him. Wages are too high to keep as a bench warmer. I have extreme doubts about whether he gets a true shot under Rodgers - not least of which is that Rodgers seems to favor guys with high work rates, generally unselfish behavior, etc. I laughed last summer when we were linked to Balo because he is exactly the opposite of what BR seems to want.

Finally - is that true that Rodgers said he had the diamond in mind for the transfers last summer? How the hell does markovic fit into that? Even lallana probably doesn't make the best tip of the diamond. I get that he wants to remain flexible tactically, but we don't have the funds to be so all over the place at this point.

Anyone know enough about nainggolan and how he would fit into our midfield and Rodgers system?

That was my question, too... since we are heavy with attacking mids.. seems a 4231 (if we can get an in favor, healthy striker) best suits are personnel...

look a few pages back in the thread, we discussed Nainggolan with wm72 (resident Roma supporter)... Basically, an all action B2B, CM that can defend well..

So he immediately steps in and replaces Allen. How does he fit with Hendo and Can, assuming Can will actually move into the MF?

Yep. Said it in an interview not too long ago. I guess Marko was bought to play as a runner off striker? I don't know. He's played in the hole too but no way that would work in our system.

Thanks tftc. I'll go back and read that. I had skimmed some of the pirlo love with intent to go back so must have missed it in there.

I think with our wingers we are best as a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1. 4-4-2 only when we have two dominate in form strikers. 3 man back can work too - but needs better outside backs to be top level.
