He's just over it. He's been a constant cancer on Brendan's decision making this year.

Does he start? He's Gerrard, he's a legend, he has to start. But he's been shite and the rest of the midfield needs to be built to compensate for his weaknesses. His upside doesn't nearly make that trade off worth it.

I understand BR was in a tough place with Gerrard once the base of the diamond was exposed at the beginning of the year. I'm just glad we won't have to have that shroud over the team anymore. He won't even be an option next year and that is such a pleasant thought.

I just don't get why he's played at all in front of the defense.

Its the last place I would want a guy with no legs to play. He was further up initially on Sunday but went straight back to that ridiculous DM position.

It works with Pirlo in Italy but def never will work in the EPL.

If he had players like Vidal/Pogba/Marchisio sitting in front of him, doing all the dirty work... than maybe..

but yeah, they game is played at a slower pace over there... I tthink Pirlo would struggle over here, unless he had a team built around him

That's the issue. Pirlo has enough of an upside to justify starting players to cover him. Granted those players are world class and have their own upside even in that role, but you get my point. Henderson is being completely and totally wasted when Gerrard is on the pitch. Its no coincidence he's all of a sudden a goal threat when Lucas is on in a 3 CB system. Its the only set up where he's allowed enough freedom to push forward at will. And it has paid off when it happens.

You probably need two players like Henderson to compensate for Gerrard. The physical drop off for Gerrard has been rather immense, all things considered. If a player as slow as Arteta can play effectively that deep in midfield then we know it has to be more than just legs. I think a large part is the mental aspect of the game that Gerrard just can't deal with anymore. It's really odd looking at it from the outside.

And I disagree that Pirlo couldn't play in the EPL. He just always has to have two runners around him to help him out. Again, if Arteta can play in the league I don't see why Pirlo can't.

I've thought this since the World Cup, but I'd hate to see a player like Henderson assigned to an attacking role. One of his best attributes is his engine, and having him on both sides of the pitch is more beneficial for 'Pool in my view. He can be a shuttler type player and still have a massive contribution on the field. I don't think he's going to reach Gerrard's when Stevie was played behind the striker but he's more useful for 'Pool and for England as being a link player tying defense to offense. He excels in the transition game in particular.

Oh I agree. He's perfect for the B2B. But I was speaking in regard to when he's given enough freedom to push up. With Gerrard on the pitch he can rarely attack, if ever. And that means he's rarely allowed to show his true B2B potential. I would never want him sitting in the hole, but his decision making about when to join in the attack is very good and I want him given the freedom to decide when to do that and when to stay back.

The biggest reason I like about having Hendo push forward is he actually moves and makes runs. We're way too static in the final third and it drives me nuts. That's why I like Markovic when he's higher up too cause he will try to at least get in the box

And that's why Sterling drives me crazy sometimes too. For how quick and fast he is, he just wants the ball and wait until he's double teamed to try and beat them. Frustrating

I think Pirlo could play in the EPL... But at his current level, it would have to be a team built to his strengths and to cover his weaknesses... But his better days are behind him..

Yeah, Pirlo would need to be setup with box to box runners but that's not a stretch for most EPL rosters. He could be hard to handle for many EPL sides that aren't used to being punished for leaving a lot of vacant space in the midfield.

The comparisons with Gerrard dropped into a DLP role and Pirlo need to take into account that, unlike Gerrard, Pirlo has been playing that role for over a decade and while not a good individual defender, he compensates a great deal by reading the game and simply getting himself in the way.

Off topic from Pirlo, but if I don't see Markovic in his natural position these last 6 games I'm going to be pissed

Yeah, I'd love to see him as an attacking mid/second striker role...

Sure most already know but Henderson is set to sign a deal that would keep him at Anfield through 2020 for 100,000£ a week

Glad Hendo is getting locked up.

Looks like we are in it for Memphis depay. Wish we had bought him last summer (less competition) instead of wasting funds. I think he would be a much better fit than Balo or lambert and with a high upside.

United has to have the inside track on the kid due to lvg also being the national team coach.

Yea you guys won't get him

You already blew enough money on wingers and have Sterling and Ibe.

You would have got him for about 20 million last year. Looks to be about 25 per PSV as of now.

Hey fellas... Check this little nugget out.

Linky Thing

In it, this...

quote:

With Liverpool's FA Cup dreams in tatters and their Champions League hopes all but extinguished, talk emanating out of Anfield is that up to TEN players will be let go as Brendan Rodgers plans yet another Reds rebuild.

The Daily Mail says that Martin Skrtel, Glen Johnson, Kolo Toure and six other players will follow club captain Steven Gerrard out the exit door at season's end.

The Mario Balotelli experiment has been deemed an abject failure, and of course there's that elephant in the room that is the Raheem Sterling contract saga.

With so many players' careers in the balance, you can bet that the feeling in the dressing room is more than a little tense.

Why would we let any good players (Skrtel/Balo) go?? Why not keep the good ones and drop the trash?

Agreed, but I also wouldn't be surprised, with the amount of twists and turns our year has taken.

Grain of salt and what not, but still...
