To be fair to Stu he had a few balls in that should have been assists, but our guys couldnt finish... but yeah, not a typical season you would think that would warrant international football..

Yep. The problem with looking at his stats is that you have to understand them in context. Our 2 strikers are both in the bottom 5 in the EPL on chance conversion.

This is the 4th consecutive England manager to call him up for the national team so it really isn't a shock. Plus, he has played fairly well for England

When did you start watching England play and how many times have you seen them?

Well he did play football outside of this season...

Well he did have a god awful season.

Seriously, how effective do you think he is going to be after hearing pundits say how he was a huge bust not to mention that he pretty much completely disappeared.

Yes because it sounds to me like it's probably about 3 times in the last year and a half

Like I said, both of our strikers have less than a 20% conversion rate on chances created. I watched every LFC match this season. Downing had 5 or 6 balls that should have been easily put away.

So he should have had 0 goals and maybe 5 or 6 assists. Not good enough for the big stage. He's proven that over and over, he's closing in on 30 now he just doesn't have the mentality to be an important player on an elite team.

He shown well in a counter attacking style for villa when Ashley young was being double teamed on the other side constantly and there was no pressure on Stu

Stu's appointment says more about the quality of English player today, more so than his ability IMO

I understand your feelings, but it wasn't like he was picked over a superstar.

There are good young players who haven't been given a chance. Just a case of the England manager trotting out the same old players from the losing culture of the "golden generation"

It's a safe choice. That's the kind of squad capello would have called in. Except he might have included heskey or zamora

I think the Jones vs Richards might be because they are both versatile, able to play RB and CB...Jones definetly deserves a place in the squad, and i wouldnt be against him playing DM if necessary

As for Downing, I dont hate the idea, his final ball is better than Lennon - whos isnt? - and he brings something different to the squad, lennon is a worse version of Walcott. Personnally never been a big fan of Adam Johnson so im not sad to see him left out.

I hate that i can justify Carrolls inclusion, for me it was him vs Crouch for the big man position...everyone hates to admit it but if England are a goal down with 10 minutes to go, we iwll just pump the ball forward, Carrol is miles better than Crouch at winning headers, Crouch gets called up for climbing all over much small defenders to try and win headers, where as Carroll will actually win them.....if Zamora had a decent season i would think he would be there over them both.

Hate Wellbeck over Sturridge aswell, and would have liked Bent to have been given a chance to prove he's fit.

As for how we will play, its 4-5-1/4-3-3 all the way, I dont expect to see alot of change from Capello teams, Hodgson has had no real time to prepare, no friendlies only contact he has had is via phonecalls and meetings. He will keep to what has been done before, and hopefuly just help them to keep jelling, then we will see the real Hodgson England in the WC Qualifiers

There's just a dearth of talent any way you look at it.. although I tend to agree with Bob on Stewart.

Great post I agree with most of it. Especially the bit about zamora, you know how badly Roy wanted to call him in but it would have been hard to justify over Carroll and crouch.

I'm a firm believer in recent form dictating national team call-ups. Downing has been woeful this season, and shouldn't have been included. Most of the other players on this squad, save Milner (in a difficult club situation) and Carroll (ended the season fairly well) have played well this season.

Grant Holt...it just wasn't to be.

ETA: Glen Johnson over Micah Richards is a bit strange. Johnson has more caps, but Richards has been a far superior player this season.

Not sure why the Liverpool fans keep defending him but fwiw I agree. When you have as big a player pool as England has why insist on calling in players regardless of form?

I also agree that Milner and Carroll are exceptions and deserving of squad places.

Would have expected Zamora, crouch, Carroll and bent all over holt

You should pop into the LFC thread on a daily basis. We criticize Stu more than any other player on the team.

Yet, all scored fewer goals than Sir Grant Holt esq.

Yeah but it's always. He hasnt been good but it's because of we can finish chances. Or he's not that bad he did send a few decent balls into the box but there wasnt a Liverpool player within 15 feet. Or, his shot hit the post but that's not bad because his last 5 shot went out for a throw in.

Ok I exaggerate a bit but you get my point. He's just not good enough you will be a better team if he doesn't start regularly next season

Very true. Personally I think it'd be great to see an old school English center forward in form at the euros

I'm just saying he isnt as bad as you make him out to be... He's not without any skill... hes had a disappointing season and I agree he shouldnt be the crown jewel of a transfer season...

Im only defending his pick over A. Johnson and Lennon, as I said earlier he hasnt had a season that you would think would warrant going to the Euros...
