...including US teams starting next year. Decision should be made within the next few days. I think it would be great exposure not only for MLS but also beneficial for US players by getting to play in a really tough tournament.

I hope it happens, but we'd get destroyed.

Will keep these guys playing competitive games all year round. Preliminary round begins in late January/early February.

I would welcome the idea greatly. Yes, the competition level would be insane, but I think that's overall great for the future of MLS clubs.

You're not giving the MLS enough credit.

The league took a giant leap forward this year, and will continue to grow and get better year by year.

MLS has more respect in England than it does in America, right now.

This also opens up the possibility for a "Copa Americas" which would include CONCACAF national teams as well.

MLS teams may struggle early on in the competition. Once they get the format and player management down, I could see a team making the quarterfinals or further. Besides the Argentine and Brazilian teams, there are not many clubs way past MLS standards. The big Mexican clubs compete fairly well, but besides that not much else in quality unless one country has a golden generation side (Chile now). I would like Real Salt Lake's chances against some Peruvian team.

Sort of, but don't let Chivas making the last final fool you. That was very much the exception to the rule.

I think MLS would do very well in the competition, but obviously not right away. It would take a different training schedule since a chunk of the competition takes place in the MLS offseason. Not sure when MLS sides open camp.

Libertadores tends to start late January/early February, while MLS starts late March.

That's a kicker. However, I don't see how it would hurt the MLS. It'd be great for the players. Even if we lose.

And the best part about this is that it really won't interfere with CONCACAF's attempt to grow the Champions League.

The Champions League preliminary round begins around the time the Libertadores is in the semifinals.

Rarely will this ever be a conflict.

Can MLS teams handle three legitimate competitions (and in some cases 4 with the USOC?)

They're expanding roster size next year.

There will be a reserve league next season which, as elisha mentioned, will expand MLS rosters. Clubs may also have the option to compete in the continental competition of their choosing, or a system will select which MLS clubs go to the CCL and which to Copa Libertadores.

I agree, but I think for the first 2-4 years, MLS teams will get slaughtered.

This would be the single greatest thing to happen to MLS yet... meaningful competition with top flight clubs

is it really top flight if the other clubs aren't household names here? most american soccer fans can name about 60 european clubs, but how many in libertadores? like maybe 5? 10?

we know how american fans are. mls is the only thing that matters. CCL is empty. USOC is empty.

I hope your fricking kidding... I put Copa Lib as the number 2 most prestigious club comp in the world only after CL but ahead of the Europa League if my fellow N American football fans havent clued into this we are in serious trouble...just my opinion and i say this respectfully the same way i love diehard American hockey fans...

i'm not kidding. we don't live in the world, we live in america and it would really help MLS for their fans to see their teams killed by random South America no-names. really does a lot for the credibility of the league.
