Big whoop...that makes you the commish?

I saw my first WC Final in 1990 in a pub in Switzerland surrounded by drunken Germans.

The sport isn't perfect...if people want to float ideas - so be it. God knows the Brits bitch about certain things wrong with it.

Doesn't it have its complaints when people only care for Tiger and when people want to change the game so its more Happy Gilmore and less like golf is now?

No?

Tiger brought insane attention, and more importantly money, to the sport. Not to mention the USGA has embraced the "new" golf fan with a focus on amateurs teeing it forward to score lower, bringing more tournaments to public courses, and pushing course to offer 9-hole rates to take into account time/interest.

Why is soccer the only one of the second-tier sports that doesn't welcome new fans/interest?

This is purely your skewed perspective if you think that this is the case.

quote:

Golf

I think it would be more entertaining if all the greens were completely flat. Think of the low scores!

quote:

Tennis

How awesome would it be if the balls were just a bit bigger? And what's with this scoring system? Just make it first one to 5 points wins! This "love" stuff is stupid.

quote:

Lacrosse

It's just running grass hockey. Make the defenders carry spears that can penetrate human flesh! That will make it more exciting.

This is how it sounds to people who love soccer when new "fans" show interest in the sport. No other sport experiences this.

Just let people be 'fans' for 1 month every 4 years. It's simple.

That has always been my problem with it, the stalling and the lost competition, especially when a goal is scored in stoppage time.
Stoppage time goals definitely sting and leave a lot for debate. It has to be added though to offset the things you say you dislike (stalling, etc). The problem I have is when the 4th official says 5 minutes, that's a 'minimum' and not a fixed number. Its up to the center ref and that leads to some wierd endings at 5:42 or 6:13... The ambiguity is hard to accept.

That is kind of what i like about it is the ambiguity.

I don't like that alot of times especially with time wasting is that the number should be closer to like 8 minutes but an official will never give that much time

I think it also depends on which team you're pulling for in determining what is actual stalling vs not being in a hurry. Feels a lot longer when you need a goal and the other team is bullshitting around.
(really no different than a possession running team in football milking the play clock).

Is this point to this gratuitous factoid?

That wasn't the reaction of the Golf snobs though which i assume you are talking about with the soccer snobs. Officially, FIFA, MLS, US Soccer Federation, are prbly all pumped liek PGA/ USGA was about the new influx of viewers. The traditionalist however were concerned. Atleast from what i have seen. A lot of the same reactions here. Most Golf fans (me too) love the influx of new viewers, golfers, etc. Just like most Soccer fans (like me) are glad of the new viewers, are accommodating in explaining the game (granted get a little frustrated with those wanting to fix the game somehow but i imagine other sports feel the same way), etc.

That the purses got bigger? The number of courses in the US spiked? The quality of play even at the amateur level increased?

LOL

This is exactly what most soccer fans say too to the snubs as you can tell in this thread that everyone was knocking the OP.

you are equating what a few soccer assholes are saying about the sport which is why i pointed out the equivalent golf a-hole sentiment.

and you got defensive, which is exactly why we get defensive when someone trys to call out soccer for its small % of snobs.

Because they don't view it as a second tier sport imo

Eh, I'm not being defensive.

I've never seen anyone on the Golf Board legitimately say Tiger Woods and the growth associated with it is bad for the sport. This OP isn't the first time it's been discussed here.

Nevermind man
No one would suggest tiger is a disgrace to golf or that golf is better with out him
