no I don't think that's what people want.

well some kind of do, but i presume they're mostly trolls. i just try not to participate much

however, even hallowed SB posters make "german" threads. we had one early in the WC about how great yugoslavia would be today

quote:

You have people new to a sport who don't understand some of the rules so they make suggestions on the things they don't get yet.

I think the real problem is that you're just kind of a big floppy wet douche.

i hate soccer elitists who want to keep it as some cool, hidden secret. i truly, truly hate them

i have stopped trying to convert people (b/c i just don't do that in general these days with anything), but i will gladly try to help people who don't understand if they, to borrow a phrase from starship troopers, want to know more.

This board has sorta sucked because of the defensiveness of the posters in general. It does get annoying reading really stupid threads but the quality of discussion has been severely watered down this WC

It has gotten a lot busier. A lot of topics don't stick around for very long during the World Cup, so there aren't really any random, well-thought out responses that usually help drive discussion.

Probably didn't help that Bhoy basically set the tone for the tournament.

I don't mind the new fans that want to learn more and are really interested.. I was in that place myself once upon a time..

It's the people that say they want to like the sport, but end up just telling you all the reasons they hate it... it gets old when you're trying to enjoy the WC and have a good discussion on it...

Why would I want to become a fan of a sport when the people look down on me for not living and breathing it?

We don't look down on new fans. The problem is that if I was new to basketball I wouldn't go up to a fan and say, "Why do they get to sub? Are they not in good enough shape to paly the full game?" or "Why is the Lebron guy playing he just missed two shots and turned the ball over?".
I think most of it has to do with this being a message board, so trolls, and just poor social skills, where you aren't able to watch and get enough of an idea to ask a meaningful question.

they're just WC fans. no reason to get riled up over them. they'll be gone in a few weeks

I actually don't get that riled up, but i do find it annoying... For the most part, I can look at a thread title and realize I have no interest in participating, so I don't...

Except for where you do.

It's very clear that a lot of soccer fans have a "I'm smarter and more cultured than you because I like a sport with worldwide popularity" attitude

I started with organized soccer at five, playing for twelve years.

I've always watched WC since childhood. I've never understood the continuous clock and always hated it.

New fans? No.

Look at Lacour's thread.

People coming in here passive aggressively ripping the sport and talking about what can be done to "fix it" every 4 years, yes.

sounds reasonable to me...how is that different from saying I love baseball but it is just so hard to watch because its slow paced?

Also this OP is an a-hole for his France thread. Now he's whining about new fans because they are sort of annoying. Soccer elitists are way more annoying, and continue to add to the hispterism of the sport. Watching the sport for a long time doesn't confer wisdom. You can still be an idiot, as evidenced by this thread.

This should be the case in some instances.

I kind of like it.. Granted i wish the stoppage time more adequately reflected that stoppages as i think stoppage time is too little 90% of the time

I don't want to call them hipsters because its overused, but I think you have the types who decided to make it their sport to be an expert on and almost feel threatened by growing popularity

I'll make sure to do that during the next world series thread on the MSB... ad nauseum.. I'm sure that will go over well, with the baseball fans trying to enjoy the world series.. so, in that sense, there is no difference..

It's ok having the opinion, but to come here post it and go on and on about it is annoying..

I suppose the other option is that you can have it your way and have all the fans fade away and let soccer fall back into oblivion in the USA.

Frankly, you should welcome it and educate them before you start to shun them.
