To me, Paul Middup and Stefan Popper are the real criminals in this case. Try and hang them both.

yeah, taking the blood alcohol level of kids... searching criminal records to deflect blame..

I am not a violent person, but if those were my loved ones I'd probably be advised to stay well away from them face to face..

I promise to start nothing in this thread just a quick question. While Duckenfield's actions after the fact were deplorable does he really deserve blame for trying to open the gate? All the information he was getting outside from his frantic officers was that if he didn't do something people were going to start dying outside. It seems he was getting a lot of heat for not taking any action but wouldn't not trying something (opening the gate) just have been another example of him doing nothing? Again, please don't take this as any kind of flame just an honest question. What other course of action could have been taken at that point?
I thought they actually made a good point mentioning in the doc, he was more at fault just for freezing in the moment. It's not that it's abnormal for a human to do, but he was not experienced and not prepared for that situation. While very unfortunate, he probably wouldn't have caught near as much hell had there not been the whole cover up

Watched this 30 for 30 last night. It was really well done, but one thing I wish they would have done was get Steven Gerrards take on it. His cousin was the youngest victim at 10 years old, and just to hear his perspective as a current player, but also as a family member, would have been pretty crazy to hear. Seeing that fact alone that his cousin was a victim was pretty unreal.

The whole stadium had a very eerie feel, but after seeing that incident, I am just in utter shock about it, even 25 years later. I had never heard of this incident till ESPN started running commercials on the documentary but I am glad I got to witness the justice for the family members.

Duckendick did what he thought was right, but ultimately made a bad situation 10 times worse. Honestly, he should have held people outside the stadium because had people been trampled there, at least they would have had the ability to get medical personnel and attention to those in need immediately. Also, outside the stadium offered much more space for relief. They should have delayed the start of the match then pushed all the supporters outside away from the gates, then gone back to a civilized manner of checking peoples tickets. All he did was allowed the situation to avalanche down into the stadium which created the worst case scenario, too many people with nowhere to go due to confined barricades. Duck was definately negligent for his actions, or lack thereof. I hope he get his.

But what was most appauling was the cover up. That was absolutely disgusting to see, but I am glad the documentary has brought light to that and plastered those responsible for the cover up as the criminals they are. The coroner will also rot in hell and rightfully so. Also, the cold and callous treatment of the deceased family member's was dispicable and harder to hear about than the actual events that took place.

Overall it was very well done and I enjoyed it, even though it was very hard to take and rough to watch. Justice for the 96! You'll Never Walk Alone!

The justice for the 96 chant at the 20th anniversary service was fricking chilling and amazing. Serious goose bumps. Also, I'm pretty sure I could listen to Phil Scraton just talk about anything for as long as possible. That dude is a bad arse.

Something I don't remember being mentioned was the Heysel disaster. It had to be pretty easy for the police to blame Liverpool fans for hooliganism at Hillsborough when they were recently involved in a disaster that actually involved hooliganism where a shite ton of juventus fans died. It seems a little dishonest to not mention Heysel. I get that they are 2 totally different events and causes, obviously

Yeah I think Heysel should've got mentioned. Fair or not it is something that led to the quick judgement of the Liverpool fans. I've seen something on youtube by the BBC that talked about that day but I think it's something worth exploring again.

Great show.

For those wanting to hear from the players that day, there is a BBC doc on YouTube that covers a lot of that angle.

Link to the page - the video is in 7 parts.

Was really well done, though I agree with others that a bit of history of stadium issues in the '70s and '80s and at least a brief mention of Heysel would have been very appropriate.

Yes, Heysel should not distract from the fact a cover-up occurred at Hillsborough, but it is still relevant from a context standpoint.

Yeah that was pretty much the fuel for the fire. They don't talk about it, but Heysel was a primary motivating factor for their jump to conclusions at Hillsborough. That and the city of Liverpool was a bastion of the labor party and the conservatives would stop at nothing to paint that area in a bad light.

Exactly, and more than only due to Heysel. There was a very strong class slant in the media campaign against hooliganism in those days which was obviously quite political in nature.

Rupert Murdoch owned The Sun as well.

Saw this one and laughed a good bit:

"Thatcher is dead, Fergie's retired, and Liverpool are going to win the league. Somewhere theres a Scouser with a lamp and no wishes left."

Watched it again and still can't really believe all of the factors that caused this. The police cover up is the worst part for me. There isn't really one entity to blame. Every group contributed to the tragedy. It was really a perfect storm of bad decisions.

I gotta watch it again. I'll record the encore on Sunday. The next ones are just 30 minuets long and air on the 22nd. It will be "The Opposition" and "Maradona 86."
