I'd probably go Schmeichel instead.

Pirlo or Scholes

Schmeichel is the answer here. I have Kahn ahead of Buffon as well, but I'm biased because he was my second favorite player growing up behind Friedel.

ETA: I also believe Paul Scholes belongs in that midfield.

I'd even argue that Neuer could make a case.

What? Ummm.. Maldini was better than Vidic when he was 15.

Only one of these four is a midfielder.

Should be

Xavi
Pirlo
Scholes
Zidane

You could throw in Nedved, Gerrard, Lampard, Makelele and a few others into that argument.

I'm glad you said it. I'm also laughing at the Samuel suggestion.

Thuram, Nesta, Stam, Desailly, Hierro while players like Ferdinand, Terry, and Puyol should also be considered, among many others.

Quite a few others. Vieira, Keane, Schweinsteiger, and many more I can't think of. It's hard to come up with a list of just 11.

You really think Samuel is one of the two best CB's of the past 20 years? You don't think that's a ridiculous suggestion? I don't even think Samuel is Argentina's best CB of the past 20ish years. Ruggeri has a much better reputation as well as resume.

Hell, you could argue Ayala was better, too.

Goalkeepers: Buffon, Schmeichel, Casillas (he deserves consideration despite the past couple of years).

Left back: Roberto Carlos, Maldini for most of his career, Lizarazu.

Right back: Cafu, Lahm, maybe Alves

Central defenders: Cannavaro, Nesta, Baresi (not sure if he really fits in the time frame), Costacurta So many Italians were great. Others include Lilian Thuram, Jaap Stam, and probably Ramos in a few years. I hesitate to include Puyol, Carvalho, or Terry.

Defensive midfield: Makalele, Roy Keane (if you want an enforcer for all your skilled guys), Xabi Alonso, probably missing some others.

Central Midfield: Has to include Zidane. Lots of great players, but he is the best. Riquelme, Rui Costa, Pirlo, Ballack, Steven Gerrard, Iniesta, Xavi and the forever underrated Mehmet Scholl

Wingers: Figo, Nedved, Giggs, Robben, Cristiano Ronaldo. Most loaded position by far.

Forwards: Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo again, Fat Ronaldo, and Batistuta. Second tier would be Totti, van Nistlerooy, Vieri, Kluivert, Bergkamp, Crespo for his fantastic club career, I suppose

ETA: My two biggest oversights have to be Vieira for DM and Ronaldinho in attacking midfield, assuming he passed the drug test.

My pretty uneducated guesses:

Sort of close to realistic 4-3-3:
Schmiechel
Lahm-Nesta-Cannavaro-Roberto Carlos
Xavi-Zidane-Schweinsteiger
Messi-Ronaldo-Ronaldo

I feel pretty decent about most of my guesses. Probably missing someone for RB. Who would be a better CDM than Bastian? Peak Xabi? Someone I don't know?

Let's pretend the Messi and Ronaldo squared front line works.

Although he faded due to Injuries, Kaka was up there during the Milan (first go round) years...

Cafu for right back, I'd take Maldini over Roberto Carlos at LB. Lots better players than Schweinsteiger for CDM. Hell, you could use Pirlo there if you wanted. If you want more of a ball winner, you could use Makalele or Vieira.

Was Zanetti really a defender? I thought he played mostly in the midfield.

He could play in midfield really well but he was a fantastic RB. Almost certainly one of the best. It was tragic that Maradona left Zanetti (and Cambiasso) for the 2010 WC, and played Jonas at RB throughout the whole tournament.

I will take Vieira then. I have never seen Pirlo take on much defensive responsibility since I got into soccer, so I can't put him there.

damn, maldini must have been a freak because I thought Roberto Carlos was supposed to be the best LB.
