Very few teams would survive the drop right now

I think more could than you think and regardless would be more than overcome by the number of teams that would see their support grow at the possibility of promotion

and you can even expand the US open cup, add group stages, whatever to provide more inter division competition

That would help a lot. MLS has to start taking that competition more seriously.

Would it really be that significant though? The NASL is a pretty pitiful product that isn't going to generate a lot of non-local support. It's going to be super hard for any second tier league to create a lot of interest in the US, and promotion just isn't that interesting for 9/10 of the year

For a D2 league, especially a closed one, NASL draws pretty well. If you added the possibility of promotion I think support would increase a good bit, particularly in places like Carolina, Indy, and OKC.

He's getting at the MLS being a franchise system

Clubs when it comes down to it don't operate on their own in the MLS

They draw okay because it's super cheap relative to other sporting events and a decent experience in person. We're not talking about massive amounts of gameday revenue, and they aren't making a whole lot outside of that.

I'm trying to figure out if i'll be an Atlanta fan.

Hate pretty much all Atlanta sports teams - but this one has no NOLA alternative, and is one of the closest two teams to me.

I just can't get into the Houston team.

A lot of it may depend upon St. Louis getting a team (I'm a Cardinals/Blues fan and had a Steamrollors kit/outfit as a very small kid)
