I coach HS soccer. My fellow coaches and I have decided to move to a 4-4-2 with a diamond midfield from a 4-4-2 flat. We also decided to use a numbering system for positions instead of names. While researching I discovered 2 different numbering systems for the 4-4-2 Diamond.
7 9
10
11 8
4
3 6 5 2
1

and

9 11
10
7 8
6
2 3 4 5
1

Which is correct?

I've always treated the back four as:

2453

but the rest of that seems right.

I always thought 3 and 7 were on the left side.

My guess is that the first one - where the CDM is a 4 - plays more like a 3-4-1-2 when in possession, with the fullbacks pushed up high and the CDM dropping back to nearly CB depth. There are a lot of teams that do that right now.

Otherwise, I can't imagine why the 4 would be in the midfield.

RB is usually 2. LB is usually 3.

7 and 11 are your wing players. This system you have has one or the other playing higher on the field. I was never a huge fan of this system unless your players are very interchangeable. Your outside backs need to be able to play high up the field in the attack and recover quickly.

Good luck with the change! Hope it works well for your team.

So basically I have zero consensus?

So this is what I see since there is no consensus....

8 9
10
7 11
6
2 4 5 3

We had two kids get small college scholly's last year and wanted to help our kids be more prepared for the next level. We also wanted to get the same nomenclature that might be used at a higher level. These kids play in a very rural county school system and cannot/do not have access to club soccer.

Ultimately... It comes down to what I/we expect from each position.

Switch 3 and 2. 2s are traditionally right backs, 3s are traditionally left backs.

Also, 8s are usually box to box midfielders. I'd switch 8 with 11 or 7, which is associated with a wing spot.

I've always had it in my head that an 11 is a left winger and a 7 is a right winger.

Nah.

In the modern game however, older number associations still carry through. The European continent can generally be seen as adopting:

1 Goalkeeper

2 Right full back

4 Centre half back

5 Centre half back

3 Left full back

6 Defensive Midfielder

8 Central Midfielder

10 Attacking Midfielder

7 Right Winger

9 Striker

11 Left Winger

Stewie said and I heard it before that 8 is usually associated with a box to box midfielder. But your suggestion is what I am thinking of...
