This was an accident, pure and simple.

Power goes out twice. Power going out once is bad enough. After it comes back on after the first outage, black smoke starts pouring out (indicative of trying to reverse the shite out of the engines), then power goes out again (fricking their attempt to reverse out of their uncontrolled drift).

The initial angle of the ship from the beginning of the video indicates it's likely approaching the bridge from the east (coming out of the Curtis Bay area). Power outages from that angle of approach would put it more in line with the southern support structure.

Ships that size don't stop, nor turn, on a dime. With that much mass spread over such a large area, it likely takes a mile or so just to stop it under normal conditions even if it's going only 3 or 4 knots.

People need to understand, there's no fast way to stop a ship of that size. Conventional thinking doesn't apply. Reversing the engines actually is counterproductive. Turning is the fastest way to slow down. Reducing engine speed and executing a series of turns slows down a ship of that size faster than full reverse. Full reverse causes cavitation and basically does nothing.

The good thing is that when it happened I could have sworn that there were no vehicles crossing the bridge at that instant! I could be wrong!
Oh dark thirty zipping along you're not expecting the bridge to not be there - some could have driven off into the abyss. Pretty sure that happened when the causeway got hit many coon's ages ago.

If something can go wrong, it will go wrong

Murphy Law.

The problem is when you have a lack of attention to detail, these things are more likely to happen.

I have friends that are River Pilots who all have said that when the power goes out you have about 2 minutes in an inland water way to get things started up again before bad things start happening.
There's this thought and then there's another thought from the other thread that it is extremely difficult to urn such a large vessel once it's under way.

These two thoughts seem to cancel each other out, prima facia.

Also, at this point at least, there is no report of a May Day -or any other- communication from the vessel.

Again, there is about zero info being released/reported.

The Search and Rescue/Recovery operation has been confirmed to be the priority and that the Coast Guard currently has jurisdiction over the ship and crew.

I would be surprised if we get a lot detailed info before tomorrow - not saying it wasn't an accident, just saying we don't have any info.

I wonder if DEI has something to do with this? Lowering of standards can result in clusterf*cks such as this

Twitter comments are saying bridges over waterways are made to take up to a cruise ship hit. Of course depending on the way the bow hits and this or that.

That much mass? Likely it would be negligible. We're talking about something weighing well over 100k TONS moving with a head of steam and possibly with the currents still moving outward as it was near the peak of low tide.

Implying that either that cargo container was intended to do this or that the bridge was built in a substandard way.

Did they hire the firm that did that did the pedestrian bridge in Miami to do work on this?
