Agree with you. Just like going up to people and saying "Accept Christ or you'll burn in hell for eternity" doesn't bring people closer to God. People just need to be more tolerant of each other in general.
In your face activism rarely works and most often backfires.

Corollary being, you cannot have one with the other.

Its possible to interpert words any number of ways. I read "Freedom of religion" to mean I can chose to pratice the religion of my choice without fear of state reprisal or chose not to pratice any religion without fear of state reprisal.
I don't believe I have a right to be free from the existence of religion.

I agree that if you have 1 religion, you need to allow them all. legitimate religion? The difference between a religion and a cult is the number of members.
The problem starts when people think their religion is the only religion.

It feels that way sometimes.

I think it goes well beyond the objection of religion. The mere mention of God or creator, even if the reference falls outside the dogma of any particular religion, is enough to offend those who chose to be offended.

This is also true.

Sure, I have no argument with your assertion. The hypersensitive exist on both sides of the aisle but, and perhaps its only a perception on my part, the militancy seems to originate from the atheist side.

Why do some atheists get their jimmies rustled by religious displays?
Most of us only get bothered when a government spends our taxes (read: confiscated income) on such displays. You'll understand the sentiment if you've ever been pissed off by being indirectly forced to fund abortions via taxation.
There are a few loudmouth whiners who get immensely (and IMO hilariously) rustled by it, but they should be ignored, as any loudmouth whiner should be.

Luckily capitalism and the commercialization of Christmas will never really allow the removal of public Christmas displays. Many people want to see them.
In fact, many non religious people celebrate a form of Christmas. They exchange gifts and even put up decorations. It has become just as much of a cultural celebration as it is religious.
It's interesting because the history of Christmas shows that parts of it's celebration were purposely used to assimilate pagans. To some degree this is still going on today. However Christian groups still want people to be reminded why it is celebrated.
I think we need to take a step back and look at what the Christmas spirit does: it promotes peace and love. This time is often when people are most generous. It is true that some get caught up in unnecessary drama, but I think people focus on that far too much.
It's sad that it is no longer PC to wish someone a Merry Christmas.

Its not the display, its the arrogant entitlement Christians feel they possess when it comes to their exclusive rights to put religious items on state property. only to become offended when another religion wants to take advantage of any laws allowing it.
The Satanist in Florida gave the invocation at a city board meeting because a new law invited religion into the board room...
The Christians on the board being the arrogant, self righteous hypocrits they are walked out of the room....why because the new law couldnt keep the satanist out and their presence there offended the 'truly' pious.

You know these people personally? How do you know they are arrogant or pious?
You are allowed to be offended by Christian religious expression, but Christians can't be offended by yours? Once again many of these groups are choosing to mock traditions of other groups with displays of their own when the local government rightly allows everyone to participate. It's not genuine; it is simply childish.
Let's look at this in a hypothetical non religious context. My town puts on a free concert that only displays country artists in an area where that type of music is most popular. I hate that type of music and choose not to go. Should I really just be offended and demand that the city also play jazz music at the concert? Even though traditionally most people in that town do not appreciate jazz music? After all they did use tax dollars to put on a show for people to electively attend.
