Why would Spicer posture with a tariff?

It doesn't make sense because some of those costs will be bore by the American consumer and won't have the same type of direct tax impact on the Mexican government. I know Trump has said he could slap a border tax on Mexico for a while, but I'm not sure why THIS is his (according to Spicer) starting point

What if, and I'm just spitballing here, Trump is actually a senile dumbass instead of the redeemer of Western Civilization

It's a threat to Mexico. Nothing more at this point.

Start off harsh then negotiate down and hit them with the remittance tax.

Got a needed chuckle out of this.

Those costs will be offset by TRUMP lowering your taxes and cutting regulations which will lower the cost of our domestic goods.

Such is life, there will be a decline in products being purchased from Mexico as well though. They don't really have a monopoly on anything we purchase, so at a 20% premium people will buy alternative products.

why
because idiots are in charge now...they speak/tweet without thinking thru the ramifications, without understanding that what communications come out of the white house is now policy

John, you misundwrstood what he said. Spicer went back to the media so they would stop misrepresenting what he said

Also that 20% figure is just being thrown out there to scare Mexico into coming back to the negotiation table. It's not set in stone.
Art of The Deal, folks.

My point is that this isn't as harsh as a remittance tax

And how did he get the chance to do that when he ran first against people who aren't senile dumbasses in the primaries?

FIFY.
Gary Johnson is probably one of the most incompetent idiots on this earth.

The tariff would hurt Mexico way more than the US consumer. This is a scare tactic, and Mexico will cave in at the end.
