Why does the government have the ability to restrict what substances are in my body?

i.e. - Drugs

Do drug laws imply that the government owns me in some way? What gives them the right to dictate what substances I consume as an adult?

No, the practical implementation of our laws in general imply that the govt. owns us all. Hell, they view your income as theirs and they allow you to keep x amount.

Why can't I drink and drive as an adult?

With government health care, they do in fact own all our bodies. They pay for your healthcare so they do in fact have a right to tell you what you can consume. As our rights erode further, I hope people start realizing what's happening.

Silly comment.

Driving under the influence is rightly illegal.

Getting drunk and sitting at your house is not.

Why isn't getting high and sitting at your house legal?

Because it can be very likely that tax payer dollars will wind up footing the hospital bill. Same reasoning behind being ticketed for not wearing a seat belt.

When doing (or not doing) something to yourself can affect others.

By that reasoning almost everything I do should be controlled by government to avoid affecting others in a negative way.

Your support for your conclusions is breathtakingly absent.

I agree with you, I'm just saying that this is part of the reasoning. I don't give two shits about drug usage.

Lord knows recreational drug usage has its place and can be fun as hell. Not my fault if you get addicted.

I think the idea is that a drugged culture is a weaker culture and less able to defend itself.

So let's ban alcohol, fatty foods, sodas, cars or any other object that leads to hospitalization or death. And then, when there are no taxpayer dollars subsidies funding hospital bills, we can try and celebrate in the Nanny and Police State where having a good time is also banned.

Being able to independently choose what to do on your own property is the baseline. You need to provide supporting evidence to deviate from that.

I wonder if this argument could sway 'small government conservatives' to change their minds about the drug war.

Exactly what NYC did with that soda size ban or whatever it was. Same reason why cigs are taxed more highly in other areas.

Again, I don't agree with govt regulating any of this. Just pointing out why. Stop downvoting me

Okay to search a car without a warrant because you're? on the state's road property?
