Refresh my memory, Zach, or older poli boarders. Did CBS et al... do breaking news on this? I had just moved to Cuba and was news sheltered and missed it. What is the full back story?

Typical stuff.

Media circus to feed the narrative that Republicans are dumb.

The fact that we are talking about it 25 years later tells you all you need to know.

It was fairly manufactured as well. Adding the e to potato was an alternative spelling.

The e is added when you pluralize potato which may have thrown him off but it was just a circle jerk.

Like it was yesterday ... my wife and I were just joking about it a little while ago when I made the same mistake writing the word on our dry erase grocery board.

The MSM has been playing the we're all stupid game with us for a long time.

The worst I can remember in my lifetime was how they came after Spiro Agnew.

Great summary!

Perhaps we should ask the thread title be edited to include the plural e?

No, it wasn't breaking news but they did report on it. Quayle being a little thick was already a theme.

What made it funny is that the kid spelled it correctly but Quayle "fixed" it by adding the "e".

Quayle was at a school doing a PR type of appearance that most every politician does at some point. When asked to spell potato, Quayle spelled it "potatoe." Media went nuts and it was national news for months. Quayle said he read the spelling off a card provided by the school -- cards that you can clearly see in the photo you posted.

Wasn't it spelled with an 'e' on the flash card?

Also, the kid was on David Letterman.

If I remember correctly, the teacher was at the back of the room with a sign that spelled it "POTATOE". He was reading her spelling of the word.

Agnew was a criminal, as was later proven in a court of law.

What the frick? They didn't ask the VP to just go up to the board and spell "potato"

It was the kid doing it. Quayle "corrected" him by spelling it wrong. Thus, the lolz.

Spiro Agnew was taking kickback money and bribes in cash in his office while Governor of Maryland. He was a liar and a crook.

I played golf with Dan Quayle during his short lived POTUS run. One of the guys in our foursome asked him about it. He was just aw shucks about it.

It wasn't so much as the spelling that was funny, it was the fact that he failed at correcting a 7 year old.
