That number is probably closer to 80 million.

quote:

Hitler, concentration camps, the Marshall Plan and the Cold War all disagree with the grand benefits of a global scale war. A nuclear arms race and a debt that still burdens generations today from every war that directly came out of World War II and the "noble cause of defeating communism".

But shite got solved. Millions of people died but the dispute was resolved, and virtually all of those who presided on the other side of the dispute were killed, leaving no question as to who was in the right.

And, as I said before, society advanced at a rapid rate that had not been seen before on this planet as a direct result of the Second World War.

How about you go to Iraq and confront ISIS with this philosophy? I'm sure they will give you a hero's welcome.

What?! The next fifty damn years was a nuclear arms race of ideologies trying to prove they were right. Nothing got solved except that Germany stopped being the epicenter of global upheaval, which only moved to the east.

Why don't you go bomb all of Sub-Saharan Africa and tell them the broken window fallacy actually is right, and when the flames and smoke clears, you'll show them how prosperous they can be when they rebuild.

Fascism was defeated, which was a major plus, but you are right about communism taking over in the east. That's why World War II, while decisive, was not decisive enough. Russia was still four years away from the bomb. We should have done what Churchill wanted and kept on going, declared war on the Russians, and pushed them right back to Moscow, ending communism before it ever really got started.

That's why I feel as if FDR was a horrible president when it came to foreign policy. He failed to see Joe Stalin as he really was.

But, at the same time, the nuclear arms race of the 1950s and 60s made it possible for so many things that would have seemed impossible just 20 years earlier.

Africa is a lost cause. It would probably be best to drop a neutron bomb on the whole continent and start over.

FDR was second in failed economics only to Lyndon Johnson, but the world had no more appetite for war after six years of gruesome, horrid conflict.

You are in a time and place where the world needs to use less resources, not more to fund global campaigns of death and destruction.

If humanity can't solve technological feats of wonder and amazement without the death of millions of its fellow species, then woe is us for being such a terrible species.

I have no doubt you truly believe that.

Nothing wrong with directing your energy elsewhere, IMO.

Of course, IMO, nothing really wrong, period.

Roger, your Kerouac quote sums up the sheeplike behavior of the majority of American society. People just doing what their parents, church, political leaders etc. have made them think they need to be doing, having, believing, achieving etc. And they are the same people who look around and scream that society is going down the shitter. Never questioning whether what they had been conditioned to believe was true or would lead to a healthy existence or a healthy society.

Why?

We are a terrible species. Instead of denying who we are and pretending to be something else, we should just accept us for who we are and that way everyone will be better for it.

Do people on this board honestly believe this to be the case, though?

And therein lies the fundamental disagreement we have. You're reminding me of Michael Caine from The Dark Knight when he was referring to some men just wanting to see the world burn.

I've always thought of us as the (locally in the universe) most advanced manifestation of nature, which is terrible and brutal itself.

Interesting. I don't necessarily agree with it, but an interesting point all the same.

Perhaps I am a lot like the Joker in some respects. I don't have homicidal tendencies (at least not yet) but I actually do see some merits in his argument, at least as far as the human condition is concerned.

I would say from what I have seen on this board, yes most of them believe society is in a downward spiral. Especially since Obama was elected.

I can see this argument. Nature can be very beautiful, but can quickly turn, becoming violent and deadly.

RollTide, I'm guessing you are probably a materialist/atheist/agnostic? Or do you believe in a higher intelligence directing nature?
