What area do your folks live in? I'll be in Villahermosa and MC next week.

I agree about paying the bribe - it's not worth losing your head over. Literally.

Quidam65's serious advice for travel to Mexico:

DON'T GO.

If you want to see Mexico, visit any major city in the Southwestern US. There are enough Hispanics to make you think you're in Mexico.

I personally recommend San Antonio: beautiful River Walk, historic sites, and a basketball team that wins. And you're within driving distance of Port Aransas if you really want beach. Southwest has lots of flights there.

In my experience it was usually 25-50 bucks. About what a typical cop makes in a week.

Oh.. well, that ain't nothing. I guess, if you pulled out 50 bucks from your wallet, and left another couple hundred in there, they'd probably want that as well. Or would they let you keep it for paying the next fellow that stopped you?

And to think... Rick Bayless makes Mexico look so awesome on his cooking show... never once mentioned bribes.

I wouldn't even do that - definitely not in a border town for sure. An official can take your paper work and shred it and then what have you got?

I wasn't concerned, nothing happened...I had great hunts.

Where?

I've hunted several times south of Matomoros around a little town called Santa Fe. And several hunts on the West Coast in Sinaloa, about an hour from Culiacan. I've been to Culiacan a few times, too.

How much was the bribe? Are we talking hundreds, thousands... or like 75 bucks?

It was not 75 bucks.

I'd rather not say more.

I do think if I had been a little smarter about it we could have gotten out for about 20% of the final price. After I made the call to the U.S. for the wire transfer, they asked me how much I could get out of an ATM if the wire transfer failed. It was like 20% of the bribe amount. They said if the wire didn't make it - they'd let me go for the smaller amount. unfortunately things were already in motion and I couldn't stop the transfer - so the frickers got it all. This is why I say in the OP you can negotiate if you don't have what they are asking. They really just want to suck as much out of you as they can and be done with it.

This is why I mention above - if you can't pay the full amount - they will usually negotiate.

Nice. Most of that is pretty good advice. I would advise a brief course on "how to offer a bribe" to those who are unfamiliar. It should start with something along the lines of "is there anything we can do about this", or "maybe we can help each other". Don't just blurt out "I'll give you $1000 dollars." Let them name a price. My spanish is no longer good enough to put any of that into Mexican vernacular, but the folks at the border will speak enough English to get a bribe.

They don't really come any longer. Net immigration from Mexico is zero.

I'm just a guy who had a hard time in Mexico once and I'm hoping to prevent others from enduring the same - or worse - experience.

then you're as fricking dumb as expected. I am in Mexico at least once a year and never have a problem.

But then again, I'm not a moron.

ETA: Just so you know American dollars make their economy run. Killing the gringos is BAD FOR BUSINESS. Guess who owns those businesses...the cartels. Guess what happens when some moron kills a gringo?

You have what happened last year in Acapulco where the cartel beheaded 16 of its underlings for killing 3 tourists.

You really are stupid.

Good advice. I had some friends in college get detained outside of Cancun as they were leaving a farmacia. They got the shakedown but only had to pay $100 and whatever pills they had just bought.

You really don't think people get the shake down in Mexico? People in several threads on this board have attested to it...I know a few people who have experienced it. Maybe if your in an all inclusive resort your immune to it but if you venture out into the countryside things can happen. Not death, but shakedowns.

Not what I said...but a shakedown form corrupt officials is expected in 3rd world countries.

if you travel there and havent planned for it, you, like tube, are a moron.

Again, your failure at simple reading comprehension is astounding.

Its nice to know that my death will be avenged in some sort of twisted quality control action.
